You get this scrappy space adventure, which may be a bit scruffy around the edges, but just like any good roguish space pirate, it’s got a lot of heart and some great swashbuckling spirit. It also has some fantastic character development with great individual personalities, and once you get to know them they’re a blast to spend time with.
The challenge can be in the storytelling. Its got a ton of ambition and wants to flood you with so many ideas and so much action at such a breakneck speed that it can get pretty confusing at times…

Anytime you start to feel the length of its runtime or the weight of its many cliches, director Jo Sung-hee brings a smile and thrills with more lovable crew banter, another creative kinetic action sequence, or just more astoundingly great visuals. Seriously, this looks Hollywood fantastic, even better than China’s big-budget sci-fi attempt The Wandering Earth.

A fun intergalactic tale that plays with the socioeconomics of outer space, conflicts with environmental sustainability and proletarian warfare in the future, and android bounties / ambiguities. More important than its plot is the fact that it looks effin' awesome (very The Fifth Element vibes, for me), has a charming kid at its center, and a pretty wicked sense of Korean humor. It also has a key twist that pivots on the logistics of poop.
My one gripe is the Western actors. They suck. Flat-out terrible. Their D-grade acting chops left me curious about why Korean producers couldn't score some decent actors for something of this caliber. Were they simply being cheap? Do they lack the proper connections? Is it…
Honestly, I'm a sucker for cool space sci-fi films. Throw me some made up science bullshit and some cool action and I'll eat it up. This movie definitely delivers all of that. The protagonist characters are surprisingly charming and their dynamic is the best part of the movie. They have so many funny and wholesome moments.
This biggest flaw of this film is its lack of subtlety. The antagonist is a comically evil corporate dickhead. They really shove the message of environmentalism and classism down your throat. Sure it’s a good message that I can get behind, but it’s poorly executed and it really tarnishes the pace of the film.
