A denouncement of nationalism and militarism, and an illustration of the Japanese mentality during WWII, from the honor of death to the futility of war. It’s much less cringeworthy and characters are less caricatured than I anticipated, but somehow it’s still an embellishment of the bleak harshness for those teenagers who were taught to sacrifice for the nation mindlessly.
