Considering the great cast involved (Kate Beckinsale, Jim Sturgess, Brendan Gleeson, Ben Kingsley, Michael Caine, David Thewlis) I was shocked by just how bored and underwhelmed I felt throughout its runtime!
Even when the twist is revealed the best I could do was squeeze out an half hearted "meh"
The last and final twist was unexpected and incredibly delicious! Too bad they didn't spread that cleverness throughout the entire film!
Edgar Allen Poe must be spinning in his grave!
Action!: Anderson, Anderson, Anderson…. Andersson? – Brad Off The Fringe
A nice, very southern gothic horror take to asylum genre, where romance takes the center stage as the location that was built to help people with some mental issue ends up being mistreated by people who might be much insane than the patience themselves.
In terms of its story, its nothing groundbreaking. The film reminded me to Shutter Island, and not only because Sir Ben Kingsley its in this and there are few parallels between the two when it comes to the narrative. There are plenty of good twists and turns that makes this much entertaining, with its cinematography and editing being pretty solid and deliver with its presentation. I…
Yes! Stonehearst Asylum is a place where doctors need more help than the patients and everyone is crazy but the plot twists are crazier.
Madness meets its match in this twisted tale. Btw Kate Beckinsale can step on me, she is so beautiful!
“We're all mad Dr. Newgate. Some are simply not mad enough to admit it.”
Set in a mental institution during the end of the 19th century it’s hard not to compare this gothic thriller to Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island. Whereas Scorsese managed to create a film with an eerie atmosphere full of intrigues and thrills, Stonehearst Asylum fails to do so. It seems to have the perfect setting and cast to do so, but director Brad Anderson (known for The Machinist) isn’t able to come up with a compelling script. There is a scene during the opening of the film where a young doctor played by Jim Sturgess arrives at this gothic asylum and the atmosphere seems ideal for a…
From IMDB:
A recent medical school grad who takes a position at a mental institution soon finds himself taken with one of his colleagues -- though he has no initial idea of a recent, horrifying staffing change.
This is the third Brad Anderson film I've seen, and like the other two - Transiberian and The Call - this was pretty good, but left me disappointed as I thought it could have been a lot better.
It had a great supporting cast with Brendan Gleeson, Michael Caine, and most notably Ben Kingsley doing a fine job, however the main stars Jim Sturgess and Kate Beckinsale were more problematic. Their characters came across as insipid, wet, drippy, bland, and flacid. A stronger…

“We're all mad Dr. Newgate. Some are simply not mad enough to admit it”
This definitely is right up the alley of the Shutter Island which is one of my favorite movies. Both of which feature Ben Kingsley in a similar role which was cool to make that connection. Along with the other two leads, Kate Beckinsale and Jim Sturgess who played great characters. Sturgess was one of my favorites as he was just a compassionate person towards the patients which made sense later on in the movie. But Kingsley was great in the movie, as any good villain, I understood his motivations. At a certain point in the film…
I've been going through my Netflix DVD queue and bumping up movies that I can't watch on any of my streaming services. This movie happened to be one I could watch on Prime, well Freevee which is a free channel on Prime. I probably added this one just because Kate Beckinsale is in it. I kind of figured out at least some of the story before I even started it based on what the synopsis said and the poster.
The story is based on an Edgar Allan Poe story, The System Of Doctor Tarr And Professor Fether. I have not read the story, but I do have it so I might read it soon. In the year 1899, Edward Newgate…

Blows its mystery load rather early, and then in the final moment manages to deliver on the same twist that every asylum movie ever delivers on. This isn't to say it's a terrible movie; the location is nice and it's well shot, and the performances are all decent with momentary glimpses of real quality, particularly from Kingsley. But it kind of struggles to stand out, and the stakes feel low at times, with the core cast feeling pretty safe. It's okay; maybe just a bit more than okay at times, I suppose, but not consistently.
