Stronger Than Desire (1939) is a remake of previous MGM film, Evelyn Prentice (1934), replacing William Powell & Myrna Loy with Walter Pidgeon & Virginia Bruce as the couple with marital problems that in an unexpected twist turns up in court. The story is the same, and no offense to either Bruce nor Pidgeon, but you know Powell/Loy have an much more natural chemistry together. Which is why I'd prefer the original version.
I thought this was going to be a hot mess of a remake (in theory, is it ever a good idea to re-do a Powell/Loy vehicle?) but it ended up being basically as decent as the original Evelyn Prentice? The leads here were clearly missing their level of rapport and charm though.
From that magical year, 1939 when even the B pictures like this one seemed even better.
