NEW AFRICAN FILM FESTIVAL 2020 - Film #12.
A crowd-pleasing and very well made coming of age romance with a standout performance from Brenda Wairimu in the title role. Very sweet and heartwarming, the film mostly eschews black and white villains and heroes with more shaded characterizations. It would be interesting to know how the film is viewed in its native Kenya, since the sympathetic characters seem more westernized and the antagonists are more representative of traditional values. Was it Kenya's Oscar submission because it demonstrated Kenya’s current mores or because it would be more acceptable to U.S. audiences?
