  If Zack Snyder's Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice was a war for the soul of the comic book movie, a stirring, strange battle for idiosyncrasy in a committee chain, then Suicide Squad clearly showcases the winner, and it isn't the artists (or the audience for that matter). Strung together by the sparest, limp dick editing and full to the brink with cardboard cutout characters, obvious musical cues, idiotic holes in basic story construction, and a fucking joke of a villain; David Ayer's film is mortifying in almost every facet. Never have I seen such a superhero clusterfuck so proud to be its embarrassing, attenuated self.

  I don't have a dog in this fight. I'm not a comic book man, fanboy. I'm not pro or anti Marvel or DC. I'm just a fella that wants to have a fun time at the movies. Guess what? I had a fuckin' blast with Suicide Squad. Here's why.

  For me, the two main themes of Suicide Squad are badass bitches doing bad as a motherfucker things, and the fuckin' comeback stories of four actors, who pretty much kick so much ass in Suicide Squad, it almost hurts for me to sit down.

  Borderline incoherent, seemingly edited by test audience, wildly stupid, and totally weird. Anyone with any actual taste will probably rightly hate this, but perhaps tragically I still found it sort of amusing. At least it's funny, and Viola Davis shoots a machine gun.

  Just when you think the summer movie season can’t get any worse, along come the “Worst. Heroes. Ever.” And while the film’s official tagline is selling its stars a little bit short (surely last year’s incarnation of The Fantastic Four still holds that dubious distinction), the mundane, milquetoast, and often mind-bogglingly stupid “Suicide Squad” almost makes good on the threat of its marketing campaign.

  Of course, the advertising copy isn’t referring to the quality of the film’s super-powered task force so much as it is to their moral fiber, but this motley crew of demented rejects — a real who’s who of who gives a shit — are bad in every sense of the word except for the one that might threaten to make them interesting.

  Something I’ve learned writing about the cinema professionally for a number of years is that there are bad movies and bad times at the movies, and the latter are considerably worse. Bad movies can be laugh riots, howlers, like shoddy horror pictures or inane science-fiction, to be indulged in or cackled through or suffered with glee. Bad movies are often likeable, or somehow charming, or else might endear themselves to you with personality or ambition, like, say, Southland Tales or Jupiter Ascending.
