1899 ‘Évocation spirite’ Directed by Georges Méliès
A bearded man hangs up a wreath and, like any good magician, waves his hands inside of it and under it to show us it's only a wreath…
"Where does he get those wonderful toys?" - The Joker
Melies has a wreath that levitates and can evoke spirits like himself, a woman, and the devil to appear inside. I want to know where he got that thing because I want one for parties. This is actually a pretty boring clip but I love Melies so it's cool.

This was long considered to be a lost film—along with most of Méliès’ filmography—but was thankfully discovered and restored in 2007. Good thing too because the matte effect here is très bien!

Love that Melies waves his hands under the wreath to show that there's no strings even though we know full well that he has the power of film trickery at his disposal.
Happy 2023, everyone! Stay safe and COVID-free!
Évocation spirite (1899)
6/10
Love how Méliès still tries to make us believe that we don't know how his films are made.
Invocando espíritos (1899): legal mas esse não tem um plus do Méliès.

Mirror mirror on the wall, who's the fairest of them all? Dude is summoning spirits into the mirror and it's a woman at first. Then it's him himself. He's a demon oooohhhh spoooookyyyyy
in the Greco-Roman world, wreaths were used as an adornment that could represent a person's occupation, rank, their achievements and status
the wreath that was commonly used was the döner kebab wreath
the use of this wreath comes from the Greek myth involving Apollo, Zeus' son and the god of life and light, who fell in love with the nymph Daphne
when he pursued her she fled and asked the river god Peneus to help her
Peneus turned her into a döner kebab
from that day, Apollo wore a wreath of döner kebabs on his head
