"Kill me a thousand times but keep saying Theodoooore.. while you're at it"
Never have I ever been in love with a name before this much... Grace Phipps, you are a legend.
Keeping up with the current trends Superhost follows two travel vloggers who check into a vacation rental on their quest to save their YouTube channel and gain some much-needed traction that they once had.
The plot starts out pretty nicely and starts developing characters in a fairly balanced way and a real big positive for not tagging the narcissistic duo as protagonists. But as we progress along towards the last 30mins you can't help but start losing your brain…
Superhost is a nice surprise. Despite its somewhat tacky premise and obvious cliches, it manages to provide an overall intense and engrossing experience that rides on atmospheric vibe and top-notch performance from Gracie Gillam. It's simply a fun ride that's highly reminiscent of Shyamalan's The Visit or Mark Duplass' Creep, and one that mocks the social media influencers with some resounding effects.
Plot wise there's not much to Superhost that's subversive, but it's the way director Brandon Christensen approaches the story with a foursome cast and a secluded space that's impressive. The eerie filming location and the gruesome killing scenes are also highly memorable. Gracie Gillam, playing the villain with a dark sense of humor and a bubbly personality, provided…
You’ve definitely seen this story before - with the likes of The Rental and Creep… but this has a social media twist to help it stand out a bit.
The film is absolutely elevated by Grace Phipps’s performance, I would give her a 5/5 for the perfect comedic lunacy.
The main reason this is only a 3 is because of a plot hole that I’m just still confused about. They show something creepy and interesting and then NEVER circle back to it - and it was part of what hooked me in the beginning.
Still, it’s definitely not a bad film and extremely watchable.
Grace Phipps wholeheartedly went 50 shades of killer psycho babe in this film and I absolutely ate it up! The way she stared blankly off into the distance after saying certain things was so freaky. She was absolutely ruthless and we still don't know anything about her. Hopefully this means her stab happy ass will return in an even bloodier sequel. I'd love to watch her off a bunch of ppl in creative ways whilst laughing hysterically again!
Would be so damn dope to see Phipps's Rebecca character go head to head with Mark Duplass's Josef character from Creep 1 n 2 in a bloody free for all!
Went in expecting nothing and for 83 mins I was invested in the small cast and the nutty batshit crazy antagonist! I loved it! One of the best Shudder releases so far this year!
i like the characters' acting, especially the killer. really gives me a creep. don't get your hope too high, it's a nice horror movie to chill but basic and almost predictable. i enjoyed it anyway, had seen others worse than this.
I’m kinda diggin’ the whole sub genre of rental house gone wrong scenarios .. this was a pretty groovy slasher with lots of dark comedy … The hostess reminded me a bit of Anne wilkes, just a super unhinged animated freak show of a woman.. definitely over the top. The renters make videos reviewing rental properties and have definitely signed up for more than they expected … they think they’ve gotten lucky because the hostess is weird ! You can’t really go wrong here, it’s short and on shudder .. I definitely recommend it.
Dead body in the basement, absolutely 0 stars …
On a final note - Claire didn’t deserve teddy 😑
My decision tree for watching a new horror streamer, whether it's a new Shudder or Netflix Original is very scientific. I get an email notification, I check a few places for the movie rating (Letterboxd, RT, IMDB), and then I give it a try. My rating system is straightforward:
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A Masterpiece
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Eminently Rewatchable
⭐️⭐️⭐️ Ok. 3.5 - I was definitely entertained
⭐️⭐️ Bad.
⭐️ Garbage.
This was ok -- could've been better. It reminded me of Creep and a ton of other vlogger/found footage movies (Cam, Host, etc.)
The AirBnB host is the best part about this. She's completely whackadoodle and the fact that this clueless vlogger couple doesn't figure that out until much later is just lame.
The vlogger couple also have no chemistry at all, and both are essentially unlikeable. But then Barbara Crampton arrives just in time to save the day, and the movie.
Barbara is my queen.
Superhosts unite! Here's a girl I'm into, who can resist that gigantic SMILE.
I instantly cat hiss when I hear the sales patter of..... like, subscribe. A couple of influencers, making money on reactions, and picking holes.
Let's turn the tables and have those cameras examine these influencers, oooo zero stars.
Well they booked a lovely place, and I'm glad Barbara came along for the faces she pulls. Especially that knife one.
What’s up guys? My name is Cammmalot and welcome to another episode of: “Super Premises Wasted”
Don’t forget to smash that ‘like’ button and click that little bell so you never miss an episode. And this week we’re watching Superhost! This is a super great idea for a movie where two unlikable travel vloggers check into a vacation rental that’s run by a fantastic crazy lady who’ll do anything for a good review. There’s also a crazy cat room, but don’t focus too much on that because it’s completely inconsequential.
😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾😾
What’s up guys? Welcome to the next paragraph. I just wanted to say Gracie Gillam’s Superhost Rebecca was the saving grace of the film. She was so awesomely awkward…
i really hate when horror films have vloggers or youtubers as their main characters, but i'm willing to give this one a pass because of how great gracie gillam is in this. her character might be crazy, but she's willing to do whatever it takes to get what she wants and i can't fault her for that.
The performance from grace Philip's makes this film enjoyable, watching her go crazy was fun. Seeing her staring daggers through a window covered in blood or taking strange pauses while speaking, frozen In a strange smile was nutty. She really makes this film. The ending is great and what happens to Barbara Comptons character in the film is gruesome. Great death scene.
