A Canadian production shot in California and featuring one of the coolest movie posters of all time, Superstition has a lot of things going for it that immediately hit my sweet spot... a shadowy witch figure (yes, from the poster!!) illuminated in light/fog while shifting through a house like an Argento tracking shot, cackling ambiance, people being thrown around a kitchen, a pulsating score, exploding microwaved heads, an elevator shaft hanging, a priest getting crushed in vice-like (wine making?) machine, a body severed in two by a possessed window, death by renegade circular saw blade, death by a shattered mirror, and someone has their head hammered to the floor with a stake.
This supernatural witch slasher has a definite Italian…
Watched this mostly because of the poster which is stellar, but this turned out to be a pretty solid supernatural slasher. Boasts a good body count with some fun kills. The circular saw accident was easily my favorite. What keeps this from a higher score is that it drags pretty heavily between kills, even though the time between kills is pretty evenly spaced. Some of kills happen so randomly, it can be pretty funny at times. I don’t think this quite lived up to the poster or some of the reviews I had read, but this was definitely a fun watch.

Love this underrated gem. Totally nutso with an Italian vibe and some gnarly death scenes. A leetle slow here and there but the last act payoff and brutality are excellent. The perfect low key under the radar supernatural witch slasher gem! Also... perhaps the greatest poster of all time?
Hot damn this was fanfuckingtastic! And I really needed it after a shitty day at work...and I wasn’t even at work today! Like I was super excited to get promoted a few months back and now I’m just like “JFC this is not even worth the stress” so yeah that’s where I’m at with that. DONE.
Anyway, this was amazing! It hit all the right notes for me: great atmosphere, creepy ass house with endless dark hallways, incredibly gory deaths. How is this not a legit classic?! And look at that poster! It’s one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen! It’s so great that I figured the movie wouldn’t come anywhere close to living up to it or, better…
Underrated supernatural slasher and forgotten gem within the 80s horror universe. Full of creepy atmosphere, great practical FX and some solid WTF moments. Plus it's Canadian so you know it's going to be top notch! And how awesome is that poster art??
A witch has returned from the dead to seek revenge on anyone who visits her old stomping ground. Namely a creepy old house and the small town surrounding it. And she doesn't waste any time! In the first ten minutes a guy is cut in half by a window while anothers head is exploded in a microwave. Gotta love a solid gory opening!
The film has this late 70s supernatural thriller vibe during some of the slower parts.…

I'm baffled that Superstition was so elusive before finally getting a much deserved blu ray release a couple of years ago. It's just such a sturdy and comforting horror film and one of the true underseen gems of the 80s.
I just love how this simultaneously feels like a competent and classic horror film while also having its outrageous B movie moments. All my favourite elements are here. Its got the quirky 80s slasher parts, the supernatural Italio-horror moments, the creepy atmosphere and slow building terror. The jarring gore and endearing practical FX. The full package.
The poster art is totally killer and I'm instantly in love with films that have this type of subtle demon hand/cloaked figure/fog machine/euro-horror lighting. Its a winning combo that warms the soul.
Great 80's flick. Working my way through a youtube playlist of 80s and 90s. Lots of great stuff. Intro to the film is the best part imo, great, batshit kills - but there's gore galore throughout, a creepy little kid ghost you just know is bad news, seemingly innocent preacher teenagers that turn out to be nonstop snark - one or possibly both of them die horribly? And some other dumb kid. It's great. Oh and a priest. Lots of dying horribly in this movie which I need rn.
You know what's just sort of against the rules? Getting a thing u bullied a customer service person into giving u and then STILL insulting them on your way out. It's…

1982 Marathon - Film #24
”You may have doomed us all, churchman”
So here’s a big ole batch of goofy ’n gory 80’s fun that feels like an amateurish film-school frat-house summer project.
And best of all, this giallo inspired ghost story with its slasher aspirations has zero qualms about taking out the children.
BONUS POINTS for the rogue saw-blade that completely defies all the laws of physics and yet not a single character discusses it. I guess it just musta been another one of those freak saw-blade accidents we always hear about…
”Shut your bitchy mouth!”
Aw man, I love this supernatural slasher banger. For a film that has admittedly bad acting and a fairly high level of unintentional camp, it commits so hard to being a serious horror film that if you stick with it you get locked in it's spell of mystic mayhem.
Last time I reviewed this I touched quite a bit on the obvious Italian influences with it's heavy Argento/Bava worship but it was this viewing where I realized how much it's indebted to House By The Cemetery.
In many ways Superstition is what a "SERIOUS" La Casa would feel like. All of the goofy ridiculousness drained out, leaving you in a spooky haunted house with vicious acts around each corner.
It…
satanic witches met with fire and water don’t die. their bodies are welcomed back to the earth, spirits left to keep an eye on the living, and souls delivered to the devil for energy infusions. you know, until they are ready to take their vengeance, supernatural slasher style.
at least that’s how I view it. because like, did you guys even see how hard Elondra comes back? her kills are high drama, and by the claws of her demon witch hand, she’s: tossing bodies left and right, exploding heads without pause, possessing saws to do her dirty work, pressing her signature blood wine. all the while reveling in it, just as we know she should.
🎃 Spooky Season Watchlist progress: 10/40
A house built over the foundation of a church that burned down in 1692 after a witch was executed by drowning her in a pond is occupied by an evil presence. Since an 80s family moves in, a mom, dad, and two teenage or early twenties daughters, "Superstition" is kind of like an 80s slasher with a kind of gothic flavoring. There's Gregorian style music when someone gets killed as the girls scream. So which style do you like more, cause "Superstition" is both. I go for the gothic stuff, so I found the flashbacks to the witch trial and pond execution weird and pretty well done. The 80s slasher parts are good but not totally stand out material, though…
