A Mondo documentary following the customs and rites of passage of various tribes in Africa.
Two words that are likely to give pause to even the hardiest of extreme cinema fans are mondo and Africa. While this Italian effort from 1982 is thankfully free from any human death footage, don't think that this is any easier a ride.
Focusing on the tribal customs and rites of passage ceremonies of various African peoples, the "highlight" of this slice of mondo madness is the unflinching and unrelenting footage of male and female circumcision that has to be endured by children in their transition to man and womanhood.
While I don't tend to talk to the screen while watching something, the phrases, "Fuck off!", "Noooo!", "You dirty bastard!" and "Get to fuck!" were repeated regularly by myself throughout these sequences.
Other notable sequences show tribal members having their teeth chiselled and filed, scarification by razor blade and in a fertility treatment, a woman having a live snake inserted into her fanny!
Great job! Incredible footage. One of the best Mondo films so far. Ouch, the circumcision of those kids full of sand. The soundtrack composer had a good time in that snake scene, huh?
