An ex-con with ties to the Russian mob and Aryan brotherhood yearns to escape his past life of violence but ultimately decides to undertake one last assignment to escape the Russian mob and earn his freedom.

This movie so badly wants to swim in the same pool as "John Wick" and "The Equalizer", but while those films are busy doing gnarly cannonballs off the high dive, "Tainted" is stuck in the shallow end. The hero of this is appropriately stoic and certainly looks like he could hold his own in a fight, but also lacks any real charisma. The bad guys are generic Russian mob types that usually show up in these movies. There's a sort of romance that sparks the main dude's revenge fest, but it's simply not very exciting. I will never not watch a movie where Nazis get shot in the face though.

I get that there's nothing original but I still liked it, I liked that it was a bit of a slow burn and that two of the villains were given at least a little bit of life, the bakery owner and his nephew who wants to make his mark and Van Sprang did just about enough to portray the reluctant ex convict drawn back to his old life after a betrayal..
I liked the relationship between him and his neighbour and thankfully it plays as more of a friendship with a hint of a possible father daughter relationship rather than a love story as the age difference would've made that feel icky.
You'll likely more or less work out how it's all going to go, but for me it was still an entertaining enough film.

"‘Tainted’ is een film die het van de sfeer moet hebben. Cote kiest voor een deprimerende setting. Dit is een trage vertelling over een man met een zwaar en smerig verleden. Lance wil met zichzelf in het reine komen, maar kan dat wel als je zulke vreselijke dingen hebt gedaan? ‘Tainted’ is meer drama dan thriller. Een goede keuze, want de cast zorgt ervoor dat je geboeid blijft. Van Sprang is goed op dreef."

Een brutale gangsterfilm die begint met een citaat van Paus Franciscus. Het is niet meteen een alledaags gegeven. Jammer genoeg kunnen we dat niet over de film zeggen, hoewel Tainted van Brent Cote best genietbaar is en de liefhebbers van B-films wel zal weten te charmeren. Alleen lijkt het geheel net iets te veel op iets wat toch meer had kunnen zijn. Voor regisseur Brent Cote was het na zijn debuut Zero Hour van heel wat jaren terug en een hele resem kortfilms zijn entree in de cinemawereld. Of eerder straight-to-dvd want de film zag geen enkele zaal, en we betwijfelen of hij dat ook zou gedaan hebben moest er geen sprake zijn van het c-woord dat u ondertussen niet…
