the real innovation here is not that the movie looks like Spider-Verse—because, if anything, it looks like a distant cousin—the real innovation is that this is an animated kids (??) movie that is grubby as hell. seriously. all the humans here look disgusting. the city of New York is filthy. the various mutated animals and twisted creatures onscreen border on body horror. in the midst of it all, the turtles are the only characters that are appealing to look at, albeit still grungy. even the language earns the PG rating. it's all kinda great, and (in the most complimentary way possible) I'd probably wait till my future kid was 10 or 12 before letting them see it.

Total blast. Personally I found its narrative and emotional simplicity more effective than SPIDER-VERSE 2's extremely welcome but ultimately unfocused ambitions. Looks terrific, great voice cast. Delightful.

My memories of Bill Clinton’s electoral campaign to become President are vague. Phil Hartman in a white wig at a McDonald’s on SNL, “Boxers or briefs?” on MTV, blowing a sax in shades on Arsenio. Accumulated pop culture exposure shot through a 27-inch Magnavox, well past bedtime. I was 10 years old when Clinton ran and was elected President. Even then, he seemed like both the most important living person and a complete cipher. I vividly remember Fleetwood Mac though. “Don’t Stop” was the Clinton campaign theme song, a kind of clarion call for a maturing generation of Baby Boomers ready to seize power.
