It's one thing to hear about human rights abuses in theocratic Iran, it's another thing entirely to see those restrictions and cruelty play out in the worst case scenarios.
This is 'Tehran Taboo' - three interconnecting stories of people trying to make the best out of a shit situation. It's obstacles after obstacles thrown their way. Invigilation, corruption, rampant sexism and toxic adherence to religious laws - it's not a pleasant watch.
The filmmaking leaves a lot to be desired, starting with a rather poor attempt at rotoscoping but the truth is that the message is more important than the package. What it lacks in the professional polish, it makes up for with a genuinely novel voice.
We need to hear and experience those stories. 'Tehran Taboo' will leave you with a few to think about.
