I've been seeing plenty of Halloween (2018) comparisons in the discourse surrounding Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and while it certainly fits snug in the lineage of recent legacy sequels, this feels closer to the gnarly studio horror of the 2000s. It reminded me of films like Jaume Collet-Serra's House of Wax or the first Wrong Turn. This is less of an overt Tobe Hooper pastiche (thankfully) and more of a riff on the commercial horror he inspired. The trauma angle here doesn't work at all, mainly because of the absurdly short run-time, but the bait and switch of the central legacy character is really ambitious, if not quite fully successful. It's thrilling to see a modern slasher that isn't so…
Admittedly, I don’t have a formal background in real estate, urban planning, or local politics, but I can’t help but question the viability of a business plan that involves auctioning off an abandoned ghost town — a handful of buildings on one block of one street — in the middle of nowhere to a group of wealthy hipsters who want to turn the place into a millennial haven, complete with a comic book store and a brunch place. Who is going to buy comics and eat brunch in an abandoned ghost town in the middle of nowhere? Oh by the way: Leatherface is the place’s only living resident. Does Leatherface like brunch that much?!?
Also, I know it is a trope of…
Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a dumpster fire. A complete wreck of a film that’s ‘brutal’ kills are no where near what you’d want and holds a storyline that’s as bland and uninspiring as they come. This supposedly had record-low test screening scores and it’s easy to see why, it is a completely miscalculated mix of over-the-top gore that provides very little to no scares and incoherent social commentary that’s fails to inspire a competent, compelling storyline throughout. It’s a film that’s characters are bland and villain is even blander, kills are tame and one that ever decision makes you question why you’re watching it. The ending is infuriating and every decision that’s come before proves to be nothing but bland. I’ve never seen the original but hell it can’t be worse then this, Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a dumpster fire, a film I deeply hated.
