This English language, Argentinian anthology was a pleasant surprise. Every sequence, no matter how satisfying, is well executed. Some stories are scary, others not so much. Some you'll be way ahead of, others may surprise you. Some seem too slight, but others feel perfectly formed.
The only unpolished bit in the entire movie is the lousy acting in the wrap around segments. Perhaps some of it feels stilted because the performers may not be native english speakers. It's not like it ruins the movie or anything, though. Just a periodic annoyance.

A basic problem with anthologies is that they will be as strong as their best story and as bad as their worst one.
In this case, there's very little worthwhile, and the sum of all its parts is completely bland and ordinary.
Tubi has this listed as simply "100 Candles". That's a better title, and that title is honestly the reason I watched this film. There was a gothic metal band in the 90's called Type O Negative. You may have heard of them if you like good music, listened to a lot of horror movie soundtracks in the 90's, or happened to be a connoisseur of Playgirl magazine. In any case, they have a fantastic song called "Love You to Death". The opening line is, "In her place, 100 candles burning". Anything that makes me think of that song piques my curiosity.

I was pretty bummed by this. None of the stories really hit for me, and I wish it had been made up of a whole bunch of very short stories because as it was a lot of the segments kinda dragged on
A group of friends come together to play a ritualistic game whereby they surround themselves with 100 candles and each tell a scary story before blowing a candle out in front of a mirror to expose the spirits surrounding them. It forms the overriding plot that frames a number of short stories told by each person. The major problem with 100 Candles is that not only is the main story little more than luggage of almost no interest whatsoever, tragically the short stories themselves never rise above mediocre at best. As a result the movie is a slog and will test the patience of even the most forgiving viewer.
Filmed in New Zealand, this took a year to make it to the US, with a slightly different title. It’s essentially an anthology film with the wraparound being that a group of friends reunite to play a game. The rules of the game are to tell a story of horror to terrify the others. Honestly, this part kind of sucks. The ghost stories themselves are a lot more interesting — well shot and acted and much better than the filler between them. For the most part, at least.
This movie isn’t going to win any awards but it was at least worth watching — AND the segments have some pretty good scares and twists, aside from mostly being too short.…
