The film is trying to be such a crowd pleaser that it’s kinda hard to enjoy.
It’s just sappy and I didn’t really buy much of anything in the movie.
There’s definitely highlights with the acting and Sorkin’s witty dialogue but it’s not really a must.
Entertaining, ridiculously Sorkinian reflection on the intersection between the personal and the political. For better or worse, The American President has all the hallmarks of an Aaron Sorkin movie, including a political setting, rapid-fire witty dialogue, likable characters who are almost perfect at their jobs, lengthy monologues, horrendously over-the-top musical cues, and an odd balance of snark and earnestness. It’s basically a rough draft of an extended West Wing episode with a dash of romantic comedy thrown in. Michael Douglas literally says “walk with me” near the end of the movie.
Sorkin’s dialogue is always his strong suit, but, other than Charlie Wilson’s War, this is his weakest screenplay to date. A lot of the dialogue is still very snappy and fun, but…
