There's a lot to improve here but considering the main character is a sapphic archer who made men eat shit, I liked it. Also, can't help to think that Girls Like Girls is a heavy reference on the first part.
*This is based on true events, but this missed the opportunity to actually focus on the subject issue.
Well this just isn’t very good. It definitely has moments that stand out, but overall it’s generic, and aside from Bailey Noble everyone else is pretty meh.
Now it’s called the Archer so obviously there’s some archery involved which is the only reason this made it to my watchlist. That part was cool, but a little silly in parts.
Check out how this stands up to other archery flicks with my best and worst of archery in movies list here.
This is good little action survival thriller that I adore for being super gay when other movies would have used it as subtext without having any explicitly gay moments. Plot is short and sweet, and the characters are really well done. I lost my mind at so many moments that were too goddamn gay for me to handle.
Between this and Tomb Raider I think Lesbians With A Bow & Arrow might be my new favorite genre.
a sort of smaller scale prison escape movie with really reckless people and also the music sucks
SXSW 2017 - Movie #27
It's like a good mixture of Holes, The Hunger Games, and Thelma & Louise.
Also, the main actress looks so much like Daisy Ridley, I had to look up to make sure they weren't twins.
The writing is like fan fiction but like... I'm not complaining too much???
This movie is wild though it's the worst parts of OITNB (the gross prison guard antagonists) combined with WLW genre television trope excellence.
And archery??????!?!?!?
And apparently this was inspired by true events????
Quickie Review
From the company behind all those movies you see on Netflix and Lifetime comes this action thriller that is told to be based on a true story but the events depicted here say otherwise. Bailey Noble ("True Blood") plays a champion archer who is sentenced to serve time at a juvenile correctional facility after brutally assaulting a guy in self-defense. When she gets there, she discovers that it's a corrupt and twisted for-profit prison and she teams up with a fellow inmate (Jeanine Mason, "Roswell, New Mexico") to make an escape into the woods with the warden (Bill Sage) hot on their trail, intent on keeping his intentions for the prison a secret by any means necessary, including…
How do you appropriately review a movie when what you like about it is so subtle? I guess you start out with that sentence and go from there.
The Archer did such a good job of portraying real female strength. No, not all women can be bad ass archers. But all women have a strongness to them. It just that realization that being strong isn't bad, that doesn't happen to all women (for a variety of legitimate reasons). But The Archer shows that realization in such a rich and thrilling way. And it's beautiful.
The movie “The Archer” was inspired by actual events. An expert state champion archer name Lauren Pierce was given a sentence to go to a detention center for an indeterminate amount of time. The name of the detention center was Paradise Trails which was located in the mountainous areas of California. Upon her arrival Lauren met Gunnery Sergeant Bob Patrice and his son Michael. They ran the facility in a very harsh, aggressive and brutal manner. Lauren and Rebecca was able to escape the facilities and reach a safe haven. They also learned that Bob and a local judge Hayes Bodkin were having kickbacks given to them by sending the children to a not for profit facility. On many occasions…
