This documentary is almost as bad as its name. It's a shame too because Organized Noize and the Dungeon Family made some great, original and important music. They deserve a more focused and better made documentary than this.
Something of a niche documentary for fans of Outkast and Goodie Mob, covering the story of the production unit that was responsible for their first two albums, bringing the world TLC's 'Waterfalls' and En Vogue's 'Don't Let Go'. Their name isn't one many outside of rap will recognise but their influence has been widely felt.
Some years before the Dirty South came and changed the musical and business dynamics of rap, Organized Noize created a fresh sound based on live instrumentation and drum beats, at a time when rap was dominated by East and West coast acts. The Outkast and Goodie Mob sound was refreshing to hear, balancing musical skill, Southern roots and thoughtfulness without comprising the essence of hip-hop.…
There's no better time than right now to take a look back at Organized Noize and Outkast and Goodie Mob, etc. too bad this doc is so corny.
So many record scratches, weird echo effects, fade outs on interviews; I think Quincy Jones III (i know...) thought he was editing his movie in a method analogous to the way these artists constructed their sound, but boy does it not play.
Fun trivia throughout tho and I could listen to stories about The Dungeon ad nauseam. If they ever turned this into a biopic you would have to get Andre Royo to play Rico Wade, yea? Too old I guess, but their speech patterns are wildly similar.
Needed more Future.
If you know anything about hip-hop, Southern hip-hop especially, you should already know who The Dungeon family is and what they did for Atlanta's rap scene. If not, this is the doc to watch, fan or not. It focuses solely on the brain trust, Organized Noize, that brought Outkast & Goodie Mobb as well as others to the forefront. Of course like most docs it chronicles the rise and fall, in its best moments it perfectly captures the creative genius of these artists, how their art came to life and influenced generations of artist to come.
Sidenotes: Loved seeing Metro Boomin, Sonny Digital & Kane Beatz showing love. But where the hell was Big KRIT? If anybody owes their sound to Organized Noize, it's him.

Organized noize is definitely one of the main reasons why OutKast became OutKast. Their production was always innovative and ahead of its time. They deserve their flowers truly one of the best producers ever.
It's an Organized Noize lovefest, and it takes for granted that you're there already.
