The Babadook is not a horror film... not to me, at least. It's a dark, brooding psychological drama that utilizes tropes of the horror genre to convey an underlying message. It's a film about two things: grief and drug addiction. This is quite clear to me. "You can't get rid of The Babadook." Certainly, you can't; you can't get rid of your addictions, and you can't get rid of the feeling of missing your deceased loved ones... you can only tame yourself to live without harmful, escapist tendencies. the most satisfying domestic horror movie I've seen since THE OTHERS. Its brilliantly crafted scares are a means not an end, always building towards a crisply linear but unusually palpable portrait of grief and its lingering effects. Jennifer Kent has been working on this for nearly a decade, and it shows.

Way, way too thematically blunt to be frightening—it's the inexplicable that terrifies me, and this film practically writes its own doctoral thesis, "Festering Grief And Post-Traumatic Transference As Id Monster In Contemporary Australian Horror." Which is a shame, because Kent demonstrates a keen understanding of how to wreak havoc via unsettling compositions and jarring cuts (nearly applauded when the shot of Sam standing atop the swingset was followed by a quick shot of mom and her sister rising in alarm and then a smash cut to Sam wailing out of focus in the back seat of the car), and her two lead actors are both deliriously unhinged. Nuke Babadook!
Extremely difficult to see this film through to the end as I found the central characters beyond annoying making it impossible to care one way or the other what happens to them!
As far as being a horror film there was a glimmer of hope in the beginning what with the mysterious book about said Babadook and the properly set atmosphere promising impending doom which overrode my desire to click on the eject button!
However when you rely totally on sense of dread to carry your film you better have one hell of a pay off in the end! It DIDN'T! It was painfully underwhelming and left a bad taste in my mouth! The film for that matter…
Friday Night Fever
The Babadook is relentlessly gripping, refreshingly innovative, emotionally charged up, emotionally draining and ultimately, one of the most gratifying films that I have seen in recent times. There is such a terrific sense of atmospheric horror that leverages on the constant shifts between internal paranoia, self-doubt, relentless supernatural interventions and the actual, imminent lurking of possession. The brilliant amalgamation of all these allow the film to transcend the normal bounds of a horror film and attain heights of excellence reserved only for the creme de la creme.
