I'm incredibly shocked at how much I loved this. As much as I love some of Sofia Coppola's other works her last two recent films were...underwhelming. But what I got out of this was The Virgin Suicides in the South.
The Beguiled is not only superior to the original Don Speigel film but way more complex and interesting than that film. Instead of focusing on the Soldier it's more of a study on this women getting a taste of the outside world and can express themselves more.
Coppola shows us how to do vague storytelling properly. Her use of emptiness and space makes the film more satisfying than the original. The female characters are a lot more interesting than in the original film.
This is definitely one of the more satisfying films I've seen this year. This is the Sofia Coppola I love and I'm glad she's back and here to stay.
