In a depressed Texas town, British foreign exchange teacher Anna attempts to inject some life into her hopeless kids by introducing them to soccer. They're terrible at first, but Anna and her football-hero assistant whip them into shape. As they work overtime, the pair help kids build their self-esteem and also get involved in solving family squabbles.

I wonder if I too never ended up seeing The Big Green, since at the time my family did not give a rip about soccer?
"Oh, that's right. What I call football, you call soccer. So, this is a soccer ball ... We don't play soccer ... It's for foreigners ... Well, I'm a foreigner ... Well, we're American."
Its funny that I feel like I have some retrospective on The Big Green, despite this being the first time that I had seen it. Well that's because the movie is just a patch work cash grab of previous better kids movies from that time, but just based around soccer. It has its charming moments and some solid sports action, but…

I completely forgot this existed. The Big Green was easily one of the most frequented movies of my very early childhood. I was able to watch it at work (with sound descriptive for blind folks.) I was pleasantly surprised that it holds up! I spent half of the movie wondering if Steve Guttenberg was Michael Ontkean, and felt stupid when I realized Steve is my boy from Police Academy, another childhood staple. Man, those two guys could be siblings, or at least stand-ins for each other.
(I sometimes quality control test DVDs, Blu-Rays and Streaming Services for audio, video and subtitle issues.)
Good news, folks — all the negative reviews are wrong and this movie I was obsessed with as a child still 👏🏻 holds 👏🏻 up 👏🏻 (or at least doesn’t suck, which counts as a win in my book).
We couldn't find a copy of Robin Williams in Jack so my brother had the bright idea of having a laugh with this. He was very wrong in this decision. And here I thought watching Mighty Ducks tarnished old memories. This makes Gordon Bombay look like Hamlet.
Olivia d'Abo is so cool for real tho.
Also, huh early 90s Disney was all about musicals about unionizing and films about why being anti-immigration literally makes you the villain. What happened???
Also, British lady said look kids America is the place where you can be whatever you want and that poor kid said, "Not since Reaganomics, lady." !!!😱!!!
there’s something about children movies of the nineties that brings me happiness and love
I was extremely disturbed by the opening scene of the Big Green. Seldom does one see such blatant irresponsibly by film makers!!!!! I'm talking about the scene where the children dump Cheetos all over themselves and let a flock of birds eat off them. Sickening. I'm shaking right now just typing this. Birds are disgusting disease bags and the kids where probably exposed to all sorts of avian sicknesses. Or the birds could have poked one of their eyes out. SHAME ON THE FILMMAKERS! This movie should be banned. My heart breaks for every parent whose child died because he thought that dumping Cheetos on yourself and letting birds eat them is a "cool" thing to do. Please join my advocacy group M.A.F.D.C.D.C.A.O.T.A.L.B.E.T (Mothers against films depicting children dumping Cheetos all over themselves and letting birds eat them).
Kidding aside. This is a likeable if slightly boring little sports flick that more than earns it's NC-17 rating.
One of the kids says the American dream is dead and Reagonamics killed it, also the enemy team coach carries a sword.
This Disney sports movie is smoking crack and I loved it.

We're not quite done with the '90s underdogs just yet in part 6 of The Disney Binge-a-Thon Vol. 2 as we continue with another Caravan Pictures-produced Disney comedy that does for soccer what The Mighty Ducks did for hockey and it also marks the directorial debut of Holly Goldberg Sloan, screenwriter of Made in America and The Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course and serves as the scribe of this one. Welcome to the town of Elma, Texas, where things are depressing and hopeless and nothing interesting ever happens....that is, until British foreign exchange teacher Anna (Olivia d'Abo) comes along and attempts to injects some hope into her classroom full of hopeless…
Why does Steve Guttenberg play a very similar character and storyline here as he does in the severely underrated movie Home Team? You can’t expect much from a 90’s American movie set in a small town and this was as good as it gets. Nice easy watch and it feels wholesome.
