Absolutely fantastic!
Reminiscent of Bubba Ho-Tep, The Chase is a wonderful and exciting genre film about old age. The way it deals with the fear of dying alone, regret, loss, feeling less useful, anger and knowing you're nearing the end of your life all while making an engaging and at times hilarious serial killer film is to be applauded. There is a lot going on underneath the seemingly simple story of two senior citizens who decide to catch a serial killer that one wouldn't expect. A great achievement.
Plus, I love that the movie is called The Chase, when almost every pursuit is deliberately slow.
And this has the greatest head butt ever put on screen. I was laughing for at least a full minute afterwards.
I kind of waxed over the holidays this year (Happy New Year, incidentally) - so appreciate this Korean serial killer yarn sneaking in a heavy dose of Ebenezer Scrooge into my relatively uneventful routine. An aggressively cantankerous landlord (Baek Yoon-sik) is accused of hounding one of his tenants to suicide - and is subsequently ostracized by the community he terrorizes. The only person that believes him is a retired cop (Sung Dong-il) who notices similarities to a series of cold cases from thirty years earlier. When another tenant goes missing, the elderly landlord finds himself tasked with tracking down the culprit without the assistance of the police.
The Chase is based on the webtoon Aridong Last Cowboy, which had already…
Very well-written mystery/thriller about a serial killer murdering the elderly, and the curmudgeonly old man who tries to stop him. There are lots moments of low-key black humour, some great old man headbutts, and multiple very slow foot chases.
Shim Deok-su (Baek Yoon-sik) is a grumpy, reclusive landlord who gets caught up in a mystery when one of his tenants is murdered in similar fashion to a series of murders thirty years ago.
The Chase is both a riveting thriller/ mystery film and brilliant character study of a man who has withdrawn himself from most of society. Its central plot of Shim joining forces with an ex-detective named Park Pyung-dal (Sung Dong-il) is excellently written and although the big reveal is slightly predictable, the execution is phenomenal. Shim's dynamic with the detective is also nicely captured, making the biggest emotional beat of the story hit a lot harder.
Baek Yoon-sik delivers a captivating portrayal of a man who feels…
I liked it.
It was entertaining, sometimes funny, it kept me guessing and the cast were great.
Some unexpectedly gorey/gross bits. The killer did the most terrifyingly quick face change from seemingly lovely and gentle to I'm gonna murder you and your whole family. It was VERY unsettling. Also, some lol moments and some super sweet moments too. It was a really good balance.
Watch if you like an entertaining who done it.
English DeepL version below:
The Chase ist kein überaus komplizierter Film.
I really should have watched this dark South Korean serial killer thriller meets OAP buddy-cop comedy by now 😅 Kim made one of my favourite films of last year in PROJECT WOLF HUNTING, so I’m going back through his old work.
Whilst this could not be much further removed from PROJECT WOLF HUNTING one thing it has in common is that they are both tonally unique genre exercises. Kim loves to play in the genre sandbox but really marches to the beat of his own drum! It’s refreshing and exciting to see!
It is either wallowing in death, with graphic depictions of throat slitting or hanging, or it’s a lightweight pratfall comedy complete with jaunty music & comical overly expressive performances.…
When the tenants or a dillapotated building owned by a crusty old landlord (Boooo!) start turning up dead, the landlord (Boooo!) decides to investigate with the help of an an retired, and very eccentric, detective.
I love old men detective movies and this fits the bill: Simple, darkly funny, and filled with great performances.
