The Civilization of Maxwell Bright is David Beaird's parable of spiritual transformation. Maxwell Bright (Patrick Warburton) is a knuckle-dragging, homophobic, solipsistic misogynist whose passions revolve around pleasing his sexual desires, drinking, playing poker and making money. He lives in filth, can't keep a relationship (surprising!) and blames women for all the troubles in the world. As cliched as he could have been, his character is played fiercely and truthfully by Warburton who turns in a layered and compassionate performance. In what Max perceives as a brilliant ploy to satisfy himself, he purchases a mail-order bride from China. On his doorstep arrives Mai Ling (Marie Matiko).
