The brief interlude where McDermott loses his shit on his bed amidst a pile of Polaroids is one of the dark comedy highlights of the year.
So much more engaging than I expected. It’s a quiet movie, and a very well directed one too. That last scene interspersed with flashbacks that reveal a character’s fate carries such weight. And the last line kinda came out of nowhere and made me go “oof” when the screen went black.
I’m so glad it’s not like what I pictured when I first read about it. It’s not hammy or corny, and each development is presented in a brilliantly understated way. I’m so glad a studio didn’t get ahold of this.
BTK home-invaded, tied up, strangled and asphyxiated ten people over the span of three decades while evading capture and leaving police scrambling in the dark. As far as serial killers go, BTK is an anomaly amongst the world of criminal psychology/profiling. Not even a little bit kidding, the part of this movie that gave me true chills is when they showed a few seconds of a rock band playing in a church. I will take my chances against a serial killer before having to watch a damn christian rock band.
I will be learning to tie a clovehitch knot now.

*Killer puts on women's clothing*
"Never mind."
Me during the first 10 minutes: He's just into BDSM, it's fine!
Me during the rest of the film: ... It's not fine.
Man, the hyper religious, repressed community in this movie was almost more upsetting than the serial killer plot line. Evoked some bad memories.
Anyway, a quietly tense flick that impressively evokes a certain level of suspense, even though it never really does much to make you think that it isn't exactly what you think it is going in. I was uneasy early on, and remained that way through most of the film. It looks and sounds lovely, though there's nothing flashy at all about it. It's borderline mundane, which just adds to the disturbing reality of the concept. Plummer does a solid job as the son, and I liked Beaty as well, but McDermott is really impressive. I could hardly…
