After a disappointing outing with Nicolas Cage, I kept my expectations low for this adaptation. Huan Vu's version is too lingering in places and consistently too dialogue heavy, but remains faithful to its source material.
The monochromatic cinematography imbues the dark, dreary atmosphere present in H.P Lovecraft's novel and the rural setting is vast yet claustrophobic, effectively creating a sense of dread and unease. Although, some scenes look really heavily edited and artificial.The subtle arthouse flourishes towards the end add to the films anxious temperament and effectively mimics the surreal nature of the original short story. I'd still attest that The Colour Out of Space doesn't really work as a film adaptation, but this was a pretty decent attempt.

Perhaps the best adaption of my favourite Lovecraft story up to date.
The B&W fits perfect and underlines the unsettling and mysterious tone of the story.
The appearance of the colour was a bit trashy because of some bad CG effects. But it was ok according to the low budget of the project. Some parts of the acting were only mediocre and a bit wooden, because of the same reason.
What I love most about Lovecraft’s stories is the unique and disturbing feeling they give me. I wished that this adaption would deliver more of this feeling. I mean it’s there but never reaches the heights of the original.

While 2005's The Call of Cthulhu remains my favorite of these modern black and white Lovecraft adaptations, I did enjoy this one quite a bit (more so than the Cthulhu creative team's follow up, The Whisperer in Darkness). While that film took a ton of liberties in the final act (including going a bit overboard on the effects), this film remains remarkably true to the source, though it does put its own little twist on the framing device.

There are only very few H.P. Lovecraft adaptations. And even fewer good ones. "The Colour Out of Space" (Die Farbe) by German director Huan Vu was very well done! Especially when taking into account that it was a no-budget student project. Was a joy watching.
so I’ve been a tad absent from reviewing as of late because I suddenly got really into reading the works of Lovecraft. they’re all available for free online and just so good (albeit occasionally overtly racist) and I love big monster stories a lot but it only just occurred to me that some of those stories may have been adapted for film, as with this one.
Based on the short story of the same name, this film sticks true to the original source material much more than the 2019 Nick Cage version and I appreciate it for doing so. Sehr gut inszenierter deutscher Amateurfilm, der H.P. Lovecrafts gleichnamige Kurzgeschichte sehr akkurat wiedergibt. Durch den Kniff in schwarzweiß zu drehen, bleibt dem Zuschauer auch selbst genug Vorstellungskraft, gerade weil "Die Farbe" selbst ja nicht menschlichen Ursprungs sein soll. Obwohl ausschließlich Laiendarsteller eingesetzt wurden, machen alle beteiligte eine gute Figur. Die in Rückblicken erzählte Geschichte baut sich langsam auf und lässt das Unbehagen einschleichen. Auch die Transformations-Sequenzen der sich durch die unbekannte Macht verändernden Menschen wirken abstoßend und alptraumhaft, was auch an den praktischen Effekten und der guten Maske liegt.

Not bad. If aliens launched an attack against me using this color, I'd be completely useless against it. It's so pretty! I'd stare at it until it merged with my brain cells and took over all my functioning. There are worse ways to go, anyway.
Honestly for a low-budget German indie, I'd go far enough to say this rivals R*chard St*nley's 2019 Nicolas Cage-starrer as my fav Lovecraft adaptation; doing this entirely in black and white aside from the titular color is a perfect approach, the story is handled well, there's no racism which I know would have pissed off Lovecraft, and it was solidly paced, never once lingering on anything enough to feel boring and making great use of a sub-90-minute runtime (something I'll always appreciate). You can do much worse than seeing this for free on Tubi if you're in the US
I went into this with my fingers crossed. The Color Out of Space is probably my favourite of Lovecraft's short stories and I was recently left disappointed by the Italian adaptation Color From the Dark. This German version alters certain elements of the story but retains all the key beats and is overall faithful to the source material. It's a rare Lovecraft adaptation that stays relatively faithful to the source material while managing to be satisfying cinematically. This does it by focusing on subtlety, the mingling of dread and awe that characterizes any good Lovecraft story, and beautiful shot composition and photography. One of the best Lovecraft adaptations I've seen in a while, and quite a bit better than the similarly throwback-themed The Whisperer in Darkness.
