Hard to believe I loved this as much as I did, because I absolutely hated the first 10 minutes or so. I hated the editing, thought it felt like an early 2000s Disney Channel sports reel.
But as the film progresses, so does the editing and the way we see. The film matures before our very eyes. As Kevin Pearce slowly comes to the realization that he will no longer be able to snowboard professionally, the film slows down. We sit with him longer and take more time to process everything much like he needs.
The film almost has a Flowers for Algernon feel to it in that sense. It brings such a strong emotional core to the movie that destroyed me by the end.
I still believe that it could've done with a score instead of all the songs, but many of the songs did work for me. It just wasn't as consistent as I wanted it to be.
