liev schreiber and anna meara have some of the best comedic chemistry i’ve seen in awhile. i really can’t believe i liked this as much as i did. i feel like this is sort of a stretch but if you like wes anderson or noah baumbach you’ll probably like this. just because of the family issues and oddball humor. yeah, exactly the thing i needed to watch right now as i’m currently experience the worst tonsillitis of my life. the first time all week where i didn’t wanna rip my throat out.
hope davis in thigh high socks? parker posey in green eyeshadow? the perfect movie to watch on thanksgiving break? i’m in love.
just discovered a moment ago that this was the debut film by the director of superbad. SUPERBAD! but in case that piece of information deters anyone, just know that i thought this was a great great little film and way more substantial than other films i’ve seen by him so far (yes, superbad included, how i love it so). nothing much to complain about here and a lot to enjoy, but worth noting for me is parker posey who i always love but have rarely seen play more of a grounded kind of character. she proves time and time again that no matter the role she’s just the fucking best
(also, is hope davis the american julie delpy, or is julie delpy the french hope davis? oh it doesn’t matter, i love them both anyways)
there is so much physical closeness in this film that makes it feel really cozy... the whole family being stuffed in the car, jo stripping off all her layers before going to the book event and holding this pile of clothes in her arms, the family all sitting around eating in the strangers’ house, the heads all bobbing as eliza made her way through the crowd at the party, jo wrapped up inside carl’s jacket as they stood on the sidewalk. everything about it creates this environment you want to live inside. and it becomes so palpable, it almost feels like you can.
The mid-90s truly were a golden age. No cell phones, no internet, a new Parker Posey movie every month.
A Proto-Little Miss Sunshine: unseen micro-budget family van ride story. Everyone’s idiosyncrasies and flaws comedically on display, subtle holiday feel goods of Seinfeld relatability.
Highlight is Liev Schrieber playing “smartest guy in the room” writer-type who loves indulging about his Kafkaesque novel and aristocracy. Parker Posey plays mostly blasé cool Posey (I’m not complaining) who chain smokes and has a weakness for said intellectual writer types (raises hand), and Hope Davis as adorable older sister tracking down her husband in a potential salacious affair.
First feature by Greg Mottola who would create Superbad and Adventureland years later — though I’m not a fan of those, but I love finding director’s original indie beginnings. Can’t deny he has a knack for…

everything parker posey does in this movie is extremely relatable but especially that whole scene where she's making incredulous faces at her sister while liev schrieber drones on about his pretentious novel

liev schreiber chasing after his old professor that wants nothing to do with him, liev schreiber coming back to the car & pulling out warm cups of tea for everyone from a paper bag that’s clinched to his chest, liev schreiber wrapping parker posey in his jacket on the cold sidewalk, liev schreiber eating his sandwich with a napkin tucked into the collar of his shirt, liev schreiber,,,
a great film about all types of new yorkers you might run into within a 24-hour period, while also being stuck in a car with your eccentric family members. those family members (+ liev schrieber as parker posey's bf) also happen to be played by five standout actors, with anne meara stealing the show. hope davis doesn't have as fun of a role but really anchors the drama of the story — she's the reason this entourage forms in the first place (they're on a mission to find out who her husband stanley tucci has been cheating on her with). and she heartbreakingly remains reserved about the weight of the situation while her mother (meara) snoops around and dotes on the pretentious schrieber and her bratty sister (posey <3) smokes and eye-rolls throughout the ride. such a wonderfully detailed movie with true-to-life resolutions (or lack thereof).
would make a great double feature with Pieces of April!
