I expected this to be a bit on the darker side, but this is up there with some of the bleakest and most cynical westerns. I'm used to rooting for Rod Taylor, but he plays a mean outlaw here, with ragged hair, dirt and grime and sweat all over, cursing and belittling his crew, and completely immoral in every sense.
Richard Harris goes through hell tracking down Taylor and his crew after seeing his wife and child brutally murdered at the start of the film, and it all shows as he continually gets beat and bloodied and his mental state deteriorates until he's on the same level, ready to do whatever it takes for revenge.
Hell of a cast and some great shots here and there, with writing credits to Sam Fuller, although there's some really questionable choices in the narrative at times. But I like my westerns grim and nasty, and this certainly delivers.
