It's a problematic movie to say the least, but first and foremost because the only copy I can find is a very weathered pan and scan TV version - and this movie was shot in Cinemascope for crying out loud. So any kind of sweeping American wilderness shots, you can forget about right now. The story is pretty horrible - about an old man who built a fort in the middle of a river protected by a Cannon because he is a scalp hunter, and lives for killing and scalping Indians. I'm assuming that director Kurt Neumann's The Deerslayer is set before the events depicted in literary giant James Fenimore Cooper's Last of the Mohicans, because the character Chingachgook isn't yet a Mohawk Chief? Based on Cooper's novel The Deerslayer, there's a good story here that is undone by a poor script, some awful costume choices, including a clear rubber Mohawk wig, and less action than in an Amish porno. Alas there's no Daniel Day-Lewis here either, instead we have that acting colossus with the one facial expression, Lex Barker himself, as the aforementioned Deerslayer, supported by several decent actors, including Forrest Tucker and Jay C. If nothing else, I have to admit that Lex Barker looks great in buckskin. He makes for a fine Deerslayer. Always clean shaven, well- coiffed and spick and span. It may not seem all that authentic considering the period and the circumstances but that is how America liked its rugged heroes back in the 1950s. A decade later and he would have looked like a grizzled tramp. The Deerslayer was the last novel in Fenimore Cooper's Leatherstocking Tales relaying the adventures of the Deerslayer aka Natto Bumppo but it was actually a prequel to the series of books. "Der Wildtöter" ist der letzte der fünf Lederstrumpf-Romane James Fenimore Coopers und gleichzeitig ein Prequel, da er sich den frühen Jahren Lederstrumpfs widmet. Die Verfilmung Kurt Neumanns mit Lex Barker, zusammen arbeiteten sie schon für diverse Tarzanfilme, ist werkgetreu, jedoch ohne die Tiefe des Romans erreichen zu wollen - alles wird auf das Abenteuerliche der Geschichte reduziert. Die deutsche Kinofassung von 1965 ist eine Umproduktion: Für die Zweitveröffentlichung wurden schlimme Skalpierungen gekürzt, langatmige Handlung geschnitten, Actionszenen aus "Die schwarzen Adler von Santa Fe" (Hofbauer, 1965) hineingeschnitten, Der Vorspann ausgetauscht, Musik von Gert Wilden eingespielt und Neusynchronisiert. Das Ergebnis wirkt auf den ersten Blick sogar halbwegs harmonisch, bis auf die Musik, die nicht in einen Film von 1957 passt, dramaturgisch schadet es auf jeden Fall.

Ein einfacher aber schöner Abenteuerfilm mit Lex Barker.
This is quite a fun adaptation of Fenimore Copper's eponymous novel set amongst the early American colonial battles between the French and the British. Each side has their native allies and when the daughter of one chief is kidnapped by the other, it falls to a roving trapper - the beefcake Lex Barker - to try and fetch her back. The story is steeped in the attitudes not just of the time, but of 1957 when this was made, so there is little point in watching it with 21st century eyes - it will just annoy you. Otherwise, it's a cheap and cheerful boy's own adventure movie with plenty of action and some lovely photography. No, the acting - despite having both Rita Moreno and Forrest Tucker on the slate - is not very good, nor is the writing but the last ten minutes are quite exciting and for a standard Saturday afternoon B-feature it's actually quite watchable.
