"Have faith in the next song."
Don't believe Letterboxd when it says this is strictly a drama, it's a black comedy through and through. The lurid title really is the subject of the film, but this isn't raunchy or filled with nudity and said erection only pitches a tent once in a very hilarious way. It's really about grief. I know, I know, we're all tired of hearing that, but this is the Wes Andersonification of Peruvian film. Not aesthetically in any way, but in it's very deadpan comedic nonchalance. It's also a really calming film that doesn't veer too much into the sadness of grief and focuses more on the weird things people say and do when they're experiencing…
Oscar International Film Submissions Ranked
Peru’s Oscar submission is more assured in its darkly oddball comic bits (no pun intended) than its more dramatic ones, but overall it’s a quietly intriguing and surprisingly empathetic portrait of family dysfunction brought together through the titular erection. Liked it.
When people think of classic Wes Anderson traits, they are almost universally talking about the aesthetics. Here, this feels narratively Andersonian, presenting this quirkily dysfunctional family of abrasive misfits and helping you love them over time. The oddball humour is probably going to be off-putting to a lot of people, but for me it blends perfectly with the quiet sense of sadness which resonates through this broken family drama.
Much in the same way Swiss Army Man eventually steers you towards empathy for the farting corpse, I found myself inexplicably rooting for Toribio's erection, as if it could represent some kind of redemption by proxy for him and his children. It's an empathetic, subjective kind of film, enunciating the classic…
Peru's entry to the 96th Academy Awards
I don't think there will be a more fitting movie poster this year. A dark comedy that definitely lands it jokes and lives up to the title of the movie.
“I think dad robbed the pharmacy.”
The Erection of Toribio Bardelli is the International Feature submission for Peru. This dark comedy is about a father, Toribio, and his three children, Luz, Sara and Silvester. Toribio’s wife has just passed away and the remaining members of the family are left trying to figure out the next steps of their lives. The film revolves around each member of this family, their individual pain, their individual struggles, and their search for a better future.
The film opens up with Toribio desperately trying to fulfill his sexual fulfillment, but despite hiring a prostitute, going to the strip club, trying to relieve himself with porno magazines, he has realized that he is impotent. When…
Unexpectedly, I found myself deeply immersed in the experience of watching this movie. Despite its dirty title, the film is devoid of any explicit or inappropriate content. The serene atmosphere and profoundly poetic visuals resonated with me, offering a cinematic experience beyond my initial expectations. While the title might raise eyebrows, the narrative of the movie is surprisingly dark and emotionally moving.
The storyline revolves around a dysfunctional family coping with the aftermath of the wife and mother's passing. Toribio Bardelli, an elderly man, grapples with the absence of his late wife, leaving him to navigate the challenges of life with his three grown children. Toribio's tendency to control every aspect of family life stems from his perception that his…
