The film hits hard, because this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for her and it's a reality easy to imagine. This is such an incredibly intense film, with tears and fear lingering in all moments. To succeed, she must cheat and that has so many risks. A film like this asks us to consider the ethics of cheating. Even if she does succeed in cheating, what next? Kurdish director Shawkat Amin Korki’s fourth feature, THE EXAM, which is being screened at the IFFI 52, revolves around a problem deeply familiar in India: examination fraud and birth control. The relatable drama is set in the autonomous Kurdistan region in Iraq. Often resembling the hardship chronicles seen in Iranian cinema, thereʼs no happy ending for anyone in the movie, just very harsh and bitter realities. Korki’s smooth direction piles on the bleakness without a trace of heaviness.

This is Kurdish writer/director Shawkat Amin Korki‘s fourth feature (he shared the writing credit with Mohamedreza Gohari) and he does a fine job of juggling his plot elements at the same time as we get commentary about the relative lack of agency for women and girls in Iraq.
Rojin (Vania Salar) is a Kurdish/Iraqi young woman sitting for her university entrance exams and acknowledging that she is out of her depth with her subjects. Man, this was intense and devastating to watch.
You know the tension is high when cheating becomes a "Mission Impossible" scenario involving a blue tooth earpiece with wiring tuck underneath the clothes, so the answers can be told to them. There are no happy endings, sadly not in this world. The film making isn't anything visually special, but I feel it…

Set in Iraqi Kurdistan around 2017 (there are snippets on TV of the impending liberation of Mosul from ISIS control), this social thriller centres on the efforts of Shilan who tries to ensure her younger sister passes her exams, by participating in an elaborate cheating scam, so that she can attend university instead of getting married (there is also a vicarious element to Shilan's efforts given her own marital situation).
Well made and well acted, this is firmly of the same mould as some of Asghar Farhadi's recent moral thrillers, with well intentioned characters making dubious decisions that have spiralling consequences. But like some of Farhadi's lesser efforts, this is almost too concerned with plot machinations to ramp up…

A lump in my throat, a weight on my chest, a tear in my eyes..Patriarchy is that menace. The climax is still haunting me and I'm pretty sure I'll take some time to recover. I was really rooting for the sisters, man. I smiled with them, I was tensed for them, I cried with them and I cursed the world for them. What a fucked up world is this for women, man.
When I started watching I thought there'll be a ray of hope like in Mushtang but I was wrong. There's no escapade for women in the world designed and controlled by men.
This movie was such a surprise and glad IFFI 21 is playing it. I don't think I'd notice this film otherwise. #IFFI21

An insight into both the Iraqi education & corruption systems -
& the rather unsophisticated tech which was used to cheat & link them.
Described as a social thriller, central character Rojin lacked the necessary oomph which in turn made the story twists a bit predictable & ho-hum, & wasn't helped by the lack of atmospherics -
in short, well-meaning tokenism.
