What kind of thing have I turned into?
This is legitimately the best Fantastic Four film we have ever received, and maybe that doesn't say much for those of you who have seen the others but this film is a perfect example of something that has heart; a palpable community theater outing that speaks to group effort and endurance. The phenomenal score alone, is an iconic gem that breathes more urgency and emotion into this picture with every chance it gets, and when all is said and done, how can one not love it?

Leprechaun meets the Fantastic Four?? Why is so much of this movie about “The Jeweler?” I’m mostly joking because I know first and foremost that this was a compromised production never intended for public consumption.
But there is some good stuff here. Alex Hyde-White is a really good Reed Richards, love that comic accurate Dr. Doom costume, and their main theme is actually better than anything they got in their feature films.
But this is just too low budget for its own good. You really see this during the final sequences when they try and make The Human Torch fly. I shudder to think what a Cannon Films version of Spider-Man would have looked like. 😬
Jesus Christ, this is bad. This is the sort of horribly soporific film that sucks nine hours of sleep out of you, and makes you feel like you're sitting an exam.
As much as one can complain the horrific special effects, for a feature length picture like this with all the set pieces, it's really a wonder how they did it with only a million! But then again, it still looks like shit. The Thing looks like a crusty turd.
I've never read the comics so I don't know how butchery this butcherfest gets, but my friend told me it was horribly inaccurate and basically massacred the story. Well. To be expected. Only recommended for the insane!

You know I surprisingly thought this movie was decent. If you didn't know this movie is probably known for never actually releasing like every officially in theaters or home media. The only way you can watch it is through bootleg low quality copies that are on YouTube or probably other piracy sites.
And it's kinda sad that the movie never released theatrically because this honestly isn't bad. Is it perfect? Nah it's not. The effects are dated and obviously very cheap, the production values are on par with a tv soap opera, and honestly the story is kind of messy too.
However I liked the characters well enough, the acting is also pretty decent too, the music is a banger and fits the movie really well, and overall you can tell that there was love and respect into making this movie.

The Fantastic Four was only made to keep the rights to the characters. However given what it is, it's far from terrible. It's simple and fun, just straight-to-the-point superhero antics. It channels the tone of the Richard Donner Superman movies, with an earnest yet lighthearted approach. The opening titles especially embody this, with a bunch of cosmic imagery set to loud, inspirational music. The unreleased but infamous low-budget superhero film co-produced by Bernd Eichinger and B-Movie maestro Roger Corman. The story I'd always heard was that this was made on the cheap purely to retain the rights but it may be the case that Avi Arad of Marvel essentially paid the makers to not release it in order to not damage the franchise. "The Fantastic Four" more like Fantastic piece of shit.
The costumes are cheesy, the effects are god awful and the movie is so bad that it's kind of funny.
Although it's arguably the best (and definitely the most charming) of the attempts at bringing Fantastic Four to life on film and the filmmakers do make an effort to be faithful to the source material, its lack of any and all budget (meaning no good actors, effects, or writing) ultimately means it never has a chance to impress.
The stories (because I've read a few different versions) of why this movie has never seen a legitimate release seem to be pretty well known to people who dig movies like this but in case you don't know here's the quick version.
Berne Eichinger needed to retain the movie rights to The Fantastic Four so a movie needed to be made. Who better to make a movie quick and cheap than Roger Corman. The man knows how to make the best of a modest budget. Here's where I've heard two different versions of what happens next.
