It took me a while to be truly immersed in the world building and the unlikely heroes we follow but by the time the story reached its final destination I was completely entranced. Set in a post apocalyptic world (or is it?), Bouli Lanners tells a beautifully simple yet thought provoking story of a couple of wandering souls who are each in their own way struggling with themselves, their past and their inevitable future. Told in a darkly comic way, it's an age old rumination on life and death and about making the right choices even though you haven't done so in the past. Life, death, comedy and tragedy collide in another great film from possibly my favourite Belgian filmmaker.

refreshing to see a movie that actually turns out not to be the usual cynical, hopeless, "oh, aren't human beings cruel"-type of movie despite it having the setting and cinematography of one such film

Bleak western-like movie with a message of hope. Great characters and outstanding photography. The abandoned test track for the failed Aérotrain project from Paris to Orléans adds a perfect touch of dystopia.

In essence, this movie is a western, a story about a travelling duo who are on a mission from a shady overlord to retrieve an important object. Set in a bleak and empty apocalyptic world (or perhaps this is just an average day in Wallonia), Les Premiers, Les Derniers is definitely a great and touching movie, though its story is somewhat of a mystery to me. Recommended if you like westerns, apocalypse movies or both
