Industrialist François Delambre is called late at night by his sister-in-law, Helene Delambre, who tells him that she has just killed her husband, André. Reluctant at first, she eventually explains to the police that André invented a matter transportation apparatus and, while experimenting on himself, a fly entered the chamber during the matter transference.

I noticed this sci-fi horror classic and I both made our debuts in 1958.. both of us are a little worse for wear and dated but hot damn back in the day we were both hot commodities!
The idea of a machine transporting matter from one place to another was not only an original premise it was way ahead of its time!
Oh my gosh the ending is classic 50's horror at its best!

It may be a mystery hinging on the death of a man who has become a monster, but, at its core, the film is a whodunit and why. The Fly may not be an entirely engaging film, but it's a coherent and interesting text that blends science fiction and horror together to elucidate many of the fears experienced by 1950s America towards concepts of disability and difference. Based on a short story, takes the form of an extended flashback that tells of a scientist's attempts to perfect a matter transporter, only to find that his cells have been combined with those of a fly that was inside the machine. Such a buzz. Maybe the quintessential example of a film that doesn’t quite size up to its remake, but that’s not to say it’s without merit. This is actually a lot more terrifying than one might expect, and relatively graphic for its time; a steady stream of b-movie chills held perfectly by the panoramic CinemaScope framing. Vincent Price’s campy cool brings pure Hammer vibes, imbued with a slightly stronger sense of sophistication. It might not compare to Cronenberg’s iconic reimagining, but the original The Fly is a different kind of beast. Case and point — an example of Vincent Price’s phonetic brilliance:

The Fly isn't quite what I was expecting. I expected it to have a little more in common with David Cronenberg's 1986 remake with the same name but they are two different animals. In The Fly, the scientist transfers something through space using a transmitter. The first time, he puts a cat in the transmitter and bang! But the cat doesn’t come out. The cat’s gone. “Oh, we failed!” Then you hear a cat’s cry, and that was extremely scary. The transmission has failed. The cat wasn’t dead, but it didn’t exist anymore. That horror… well you may not feel that much since it was just a cat. But how would you feel if it had happened to a human? The vision in Pulse of a person transformed into a shadow and then blown away in the wind originally came from this.

So I've been watching a bunch classic of Sci-fi/horror from the 50's and it's been super fun revisiting films I haven't watched since I was a youngster. All part of my "spookyseason" festivities, September has been fun so far!
When scientist Andre Delambre (David Hediso AKA Felix Lighter from 2 of my favorite Bond films) tests his matter transporter on himself, an errant housefly makes its way into the transportation chamber, and things go horribly wrong. As a result, Delambre's head and arm are now that of the insect. Slowly losing himself to the fly, Delambre turns to his wife, Helene (Patricia Owens), for help. But when tragedy strikes, Delambre's brother (Vincent Price) and Inspector Charas (Herbert Marshall) are forced to pick up the investigation.
Pure campy fun that starts off a bit slow, but the pacing picks up... plus that ending was pure nightmare fuel for me as a kid.
