If I had to pick the most beautiful animated film of all time; right now my answer would The Garden of Words. Never from an animated film captures its environment with such immaculate detail, right down to the blurred but identifiable objects in the background. It was films like this that makes me want to drop life and go back to Japan. The Garden of Words depicts the romance between an underage boy and a 27-year-old woman, which is a shame because this one is arguably Makoto Shinkai's most visually mesmerising mood piece to date.
In Makoto Shinkai's dreamy world of a rain-drenched Tokyo where industrial marvel and natural beauty co-exist perfectly, we follow the slow yet inevitable development of romantic bonding between a teacher and a high schooler. The contrast between the most innocent settings versus a not so innocent central romance only makes this winded, soap-opera-ish love story all the more uncomfortable and painstaking to sit through, despite its rather economical runtime. every single shot was stunning but the age difference gave me the fear for most of the movie
Undoubtedly, the short 45-minute runtime significantly elevated my enjoyment here. For better or worse, Shinkai's projects are nothing if not self-indulgent, so it's nice to see something like this where he knew where to press stop. The animation, of course, is mind-numbingly beautiful - though watching this on streaming, Netflix definitely had some issues rendering all those raindrops without introducing some pixelation.
Anyway, one of the things I really appreciate about lots of Shinkai movies is the way they nail the idiosyncrasies and little details of modern life and living alone.
