Noooo, Buster Keaton, don’t romanticize the Confederates, you’re so funny aha.
Despite that glaring flaw, The General is most definitely my favorite of the three Buster Keaton films I’ve seen thus far. As opposed to his other works I’ve seen, and, truthfully, silent films in general for me, I found this to be truly engaging and even exciting! The humor was still definitely not for me but the action sequences were just absolutely phenomenal. The scale of what was done here, and at the time it was done, is just unreal to fully consider. I can’t quite wrap my brain around it all the way.
I have never worried so much about the safety and well being of an actor on screen as much as I did for Buster Keaton during The General. I am very confident that man almost died at least ten times while shooting. The actors of today could never.
