Period Romance that would rather not engage with the period. But Romance!
I mean.... in most ways, this is exactly the film you think it is; a gentle, period, English romance in which a beautiful woman must determine who among her suitors is the right man.
But in other ways it takes on material you don't at all expect - life under occupation, Nazi atrocities, questions of collaboration and guilt.
The film, determined to play up the romance, and not alienate the viewers who want that, skates over horrific events that took place in occupied Guernsey (fictional events but based in brutal truth) and yet the tone never sat right with me for this reason.
I love a feel-good movie.…
