I recall rating this fairly highly on release. 5 years later and it hasn't really held up in my eyes.
The performance from Stevens is great and Maika Monroe is just plain adorable and so likeable, much like her performance in It Follows.
The premise of a neutral outsider coming along to shake stuff up, settle scores and help a family, as if it were a modern, familial take on a western is interesting, and the eventual twist adds suspense and intrigue.
But the main misstep is that the twist in the premise leads to little payoff. In fact, going into the final third, The Guest feels like it serves no real purpose. Dan's subverted journey as an antagonistic outsider…
