IndieWire owes its readers an apology. Lazy, dull, unfunny. Has no mood, character or atmosphere mostly because of the lighting and atrocious music choice. The puppets have no rules. The story is okay at times but the humour drags it down into the gutter. I really liked the performance of the main puppet voice actor, that's about it though. Just watch Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

If you are ever at bar trivia and the question is “In what movie did Melissa McCarthy bite a puppet on the dick?” the answer is The Happytime Murders. (If they ask for the movie where Joel McHale stares at a puppet’s vagina in a spoof of a classic scene from Basic Instinct, the answer is also The Happytime Murders.) The only person who comes out of this looking good is Maya Rudolph. She sells a rice pilaf joke. Rice pilaf! That woman is a hero.
(Note to self: If I ever encounter anyone who has checked the “I’ve watched this film before” box on Letterboxd for The Happytime Murders, cut that person out of my life instantly and permanently.)
I watched Happytime Murders last night, and I just knew I needed to sleep on it before writing my review.
If you guys follow me, you know that I've been waiting for this film for 10 years. In 2008, when I was starting to get into films, I discovered this movie was announced. I thought the concept of neo noir puppets sounded incredible, and the production art was absolutely ingenious. Every since, I've kept my eye on it to see when it's been announced.
Since then, I've also become a massive fan of Henson Studios. I'll never forget watching The Muppet Movie for the first time. I got that film the same day I got E.T. and I watched them…
So, this film definitely had its moments. Jim Henson was a master in the puppet field and his son, Brian, directed this. It seems he took everything that was pleasant about the puppets and put a sick and evil spin on it. It also had a noir/comedy spin, but it definitely wasn't The Long Goodbye. What is, though?
There were some funny moments, but it did lag quite a bit. Was surprised to see Elizabeth Banks in it, but she's usually pretty good, so no complaints. Maya Rudolph's presence was also greatly appreciated.

it wasn't what i was hoping for but i had fun anyway and honestly how i can hate brian henson's big passion project, it seems like it was made with a lot of love and that's all i can ask for from a henson project :)
When the trailer hit theaters for this, it was the height of MoviePass. Suffice to say, I watched the Silly String© ejaculation scene more times than I’d care to, but each time the audience erupted in laughter. This made the film’s total box office failure somewhat surprising for me. I knew critics would be a hard sell, but the audiences followed suit.
Who would have ever guessed that muppet smut would resonate so poorly with the zeitgeist? The sour response to this certainly reaffirms the heyday of crude and salacious potty humor being hip for its vulgarity alone is certainly behind us.
That said, I giggled quite a bit watching this. Admittedly, the lewder gags scored only a few giggles…
What went wrong here? Seriously, what on Earth went wrong here? The Happytime Murders was a film that I've been curious about since three years ago, when I saw the initial concept art and read about the idea, both of which I thought were awesome. A hard-R neo-noir dark comedy with Muppets, with Jamie Foxx potentially starring as the human cop forced to reteam with his former puppet partner? How could that turn out bad?

Bombed pretty hard on a show so i decided to punish myself.
Not trying to sound cute when I say I sincerely had the feeling I was breaking some sort of law by watching this. Not even speaking as a Henson fan, just, like, as a decent citizen. I kept worrying that someone might see me and write their congressperson to complain about society’s decline. Abysmal.
Based on the ratings & reviews for this, this might be a bit of a hot-take. But I actually thought this was pretty solid. I haven’t laughed that hard at a movie in a long time. I mean some of it was obviously offensive. The race stuff & Michael Jackson references were too much at times. And clearly this was going to be ridiculous. But the concept of spoofing crime/detective movies I found hysterical. A lot of the humor worked for me. Parts of this had me rolling on the floor laughing, especially in the first half. I’ll admit the movie did start to lose its charm as it progressed & by the end I was ready for it to be over. But…
