Fühlt sich an, als hätten „Kubo“ und „Anomalisa“ den letzten Boss in „Sekiro“ gelegt und zur Feier des Sieges ein Kind gezeugt. Dieses zieht nun Jahre später als Ronin und mit einem abgetrennten, aber redseligen Schädel durch ein trostloses Japan, um einen dunkeln Mönch zu finden, der weitere Aufgaben für sie bereit hält. Das ist allein schon aufgrund der Machart einen Blick wert, bleibt aber ob der Atmosphäre, durch ein paar erstaunlich unheimliche Szenen oder wegen seiner kargen Melancholie - zumindest bei mir - noch länger im Kopf. Und um ganz persönlich zu werden: ich will so schnell es geht eine Fortsetzung sehen. Gerne wieder in dieser Länge, noch lieber als richtiger Film mit ca. 85 Minuten Laufzeit.

Another puppet short from Kevin McTurk, this is the one I backed on Kickstarter. It's got his usual great atmosphere and puppetry, however, it feels like an introduction to a much longer project, which I'd be up for watching, but this left me a little unsatisfied. It's still great and this sort of creativity should be encouraged!

Samurais and ghosts and puppets with a horror tone and design. I want more more more.
Feels like a proof of concept short, the potential for a full real movie here is very much real, and I would love to see that happen.
The puppets in this movie are incredible. Sometimes with the right lighting its hard to tell its all just puppets. The craftsmanship in this movie is just something to behold. The world, the characters, the production design is impeccable. It's all amazing.
I wanted this to not stop when it did. I want more and I want it now.

Dass Animation Kino ist, das war schon vor del Toro's Oscargewinn für seinen Pinocchio klar. Denn The Haunted Swordsman ist nichts anderes als ganz großes Kino verpackt in einer winzigen Laufzeit.
Einen Puppenfilm habe ich noch nie zuvor gesehen (damit meine ich nicht Stop-Motion). Über die ganzen 15 Minuten blieb mein Mund durchgehend offen. So etwas wunderbares sieht man vielleicht einmal alle hundert Jahre.
Ein Ronin (Sprecher: Jason Scott Lee) begibt sich auf ein Rachefeldzug. Auf dieser Reise begleitet ihn ein sprechender Kopf (ja, nur ein Kopf), welcher von JAMES HONG gesprochen wird. Weiterhin begegnet der Ronin auf seiner Reise unter anderem Franka Potente als die Onibaba Hexe und CHRISTOPHER LLOYD als den schwarzen Mönch.

What a visual treat this short by Kevin McTurk is. I am not normally a huge fan of shorts but here I was fully invested and awaiting the next bit of puppetry eye candy to blow me away. McTurk’s adventures of a samurai on a quest with only a severed head (that looks phenomenal) for company is extremely thrilling as we encounter witches and supernatural beings along the way. If anything screams talent then that is this short proudly yelling from the highest rooftop. It even has Christopher Lloyd voicing a monk. Brilliant.

So I didn’t know this was a movie with PUPPETS!!! And it looks amazing??! I need this to be a feature!! I wish more movies looked this good and went this hard on the production design. Give them a $500 million budget this instant!
