Finally got around to this depraved cult classic. Although there’s merit in its micro-budget ingenuity, The Hills Have Eyes is crippled by weak performances, a sparse script and a jarringly abrupt ending. Even with the help of its desolate on-location environment, Craven’s voice isn’t yet fully formed. It’s definitely worth viewing, if not just to experience one of the many hollow reenactments The Texas Chainsaw Massacre laid wake to, but it hasn’t left me with high hopes for Part II. It’s not boring, so that’s something, but I think I’ll stick with Deliverance for my go-to creepy, inbred horror film.
Ugly.
Cheap, dirty lo-fi leaves no place to hide, no reassurance of humanity behind the curtains. Depraved and sadistic, but not really "horror".
The "good guys" are a bunch of stupid, selfish tourists (looking for "movie stars and fancy cars"), not worth saving for their few redeeming characteristics (except the dogs and maybe the baby, although they would probably also grow up to be stupid, selfish tourists).
There's something worthwhile in its ability to remove our sense of safe distance, but otherwise it's just shrill and annoying. Stick to Texas Chain Saw or Evil Dead.
