  Let's face it; The Hole is kiddie horror, but it's GOOD kiddie horror.

  Many moments are just downright scary, and while a message gets in the way of going into REALLY dark territory near the end; it's forgivable considering the target audience.

  It isn't classic Joe Dante, but it proves he still is alive and loving horror cinema.

  And forget Poltergeist , this might have the scariest moment involving clowns. Ever.

  13 year old me watched this movie and spent too much time trying to figure out how i could make a relationship with haley bennett work out since we had the same first name. i wasn't even considering the fact that i was a child and she's 11 years older than me. then i remembered taylor swift and taylor lautner dated for a few months and all of my worries went away. haley if you're reading this and you're interested, i am now an adult.

  Action! – Three Auteurs: Dante’s Zany Inferno

  Though he’s no stranger to horror, The Hole sees Joe Dante diving deep into the genre while still delivering on the dark humor he has built throughout his career by now, with many of the scary moments playing in such an almost playful manner reminiscent of Sam Raimi’s work - though much lowkey and less cartoonish. The whole concept with the actual hole that unearths (pun intended) some horrors from the past is also well-executed.

  Plus the teenage girls in bikinis make you feel like an old perv...

  Another criminally underrated film from Joe Dante. I'm even a bit surprised how much I enjoyed this film.

  The Hole was a breath of fresh air. It's a very fun and entertaining horror movie that has some genuine creeps and chills throughout. A simple, yet effective concept/story that was executed superbly. This film is a horror film for kids, but it really wasn't toned down all that much. The Hole was able to take me on a bit of a nostalgia trip due to that classic Dante tone.

  Douchey late-2000’s teens are much harder to tolerate than all other teens that came before them…even late 90’s frosted tip and Oakley douches. Not really sure why that is…I think the Bieber hair is a big part of the problem.

  The best way to try to enjoy The Hole is to forget about Joe Dante’s involvement. Dante’s pedigree is way too high for this Are You Afraid of the Dark? schlock.   This one goes out to every person who's ever had to go down to the basement at night.

  Throughout his formidable career, Joe Dante has perfected his brand of memorable stories that frequently combine heavy subject matter with the lightness and warmth of wholesome popcorn escapism. Dante's confident handle on the tricky blend is one that often enables his strange tales to resonate and even move us. The Hole is a great example of this. It's a film that feels deceptively mainstream and yet is full of compelling, well-paced storytelling and the kind of imaginative touches most directors wish they could so easily imbue their films with.

  story time: when i was like, six years old my dad put this on and i watched it because i was too embarrassed to say i was absolutely terrified out of my mind. i still have the strongest mental images to this day of that stupid south park teddy being dropped down that hole... and when my mother found out what i’d seen her rage was incandescent. like to the levels where I’m pretty sure that the hole (2009) caused my parent’s divorce

  Is that what you do for fun in Brooklyn? Play with your holes?

  Whoa, sexy girl next door, cool it now. This is no hole to play with. It doesn't even have a bottom. That has to be bad news. And when a creepy clown puppet starts winking, you know it is. Classic horror stuff for the entire family that starts off with that typical Joe Dante charm and a vibe that reminded me of similar films from the eighties. Probably also because the cast doesn't annoy, not even the youngest. Rare these days. And then there's Creepy Carl, a cameo by the mighty Bruce Dern. So yeah, this movie scores points early on and manages to keep those with some spooky encounters. Until the moment the kids find out what's scaring them, which is around the time it gears up for the finale, in the hole. Visually attractive, but there's not much bite to it anymore.
