“well… unshelter me”
in this moment i can’t for the life of me recall a more singularly charming teen rom com, regardless of how low budget and silly it might be. really wish i had discovered this on accident while flipping through channels when i was younger but annoyingly could barely even find it this week when i finally sought it out. this is so so so so so so CUTE
this is the sweetest movie i have ever seen, oh my GOD, i want to wrap it in bubble wrap & keep it safe and share it with EVERYONE
i wish i had had this movie when i was a little baby queer growing up w/o any femme queer role models bc this. movie. let me tell you
1. tiny baby lesbian & gay boy being friends!
2. interracial relationship!!
3. tender but clever family dynamics!!
4. ITS SO FCKIGN 90S BUT IN SUCH A SWEET WAY
5. all of Randy's ACT-UP merch & posters i'm so alive
6. standing up 2 homophobic friends!
7. nobody fucking dies!!!!!!!
(bonus 8. swearing eternal love on a fucking book of walt whitman KILL ME)
this!…
lesbians do be supporting each other tho, she straight up called the married women she had an affair with to pay for her and her new girls motel😌😌
This feels like the half-step on the evolution to the modern insufferable lesbian romcom. This is not to say this is insufferable; it's cute, funny, and touching. It has the charm of mid-90s indie to it that doesn't have the petty bourgeois stink to it. Instead, we have one petty bourgeois lesbian and a bunch of working class ones. We have consequences to being queer. We have threats of violence. We have tires getting kicked and gay boys with bad mustaches. We have references to Walt Whitman and Rubyfruit Jungle that are sincere, organic (well, the latter is more a good joke in context, but still), and contextualized by actual queer struggles. It's not the gutter-cast queer survival horror that is the real life for far too many, but it's got a twang and a lot of angry parents and the very lesbian dedication at the end.
two girls fall in love with each other through love notes and long talks while playing in fields, and they eventually come out together to their friends and family. if this isn’t the most humanizing, simple, and caring portrayal of two teenage girls in love then I don’t know what is. the incredibly true adventure of two girls in love (1995) is really just a soft wholesome movie and there’s nothing bad you can say about it.
also...I’m reading the reviews to this film and seeing someone say they wish they had seen this movie when they were seventeen, and me watching it for the first time at 17.....
also, i finally found a character i really relate to and that is evie. evie and her mom reminded me of my mom and i lol. Ok
I loved this so damn much. I’ve seen this spoken about in a lot of the queer film documentaries but I’d never actually seen it. I’m such a huge fan of lesbian films, they’re my favourite, so this was such a treat. Nowadays we are getting some great new teen queer films that feel so normalised, whereas queer films from this era, the early 90s, often were trying to tackle the taboo and acceptance element of it, with this movie there’s a great sense of normalcy to the lead characters lives which I found really refreshing considering when it was made. It literally does feel like a regular teen romance flick from the 90s, just with queer characters instead of straight.
I enjoyed this a lot. I’d love to have a double feature of this and Better Than Chocolate.
