My main objective while watching this documentary was to form an opinion, not be suckered into one by any endearing sentimentality or passionate talking heads. Lately I've become conscious of this, and have actually had to revaluate my stance on a few things after realizing my vulnerability to be swayed by an enthusiastic film or documentary. But...I think I may have been swayed once more, as The Internet's Own Boy is a tragic, important, inspirational and influential documentary that captivatingly outlines the American government's naivety regarding the internet.

Aaron Swartz believed that he could change the world for the better - not through wealth or prestige, but through access. He set out to prove the limitations of bureaucracy on the internet, but was disproportionately punished for doing so. Before he was convicted of any real criminal behaviour, he took his own life.
This is a story imbued with tragedy, but the documentary is not without the brighter, more optimistic shades of Aaron Swartz's worldview. We see his developing inquiry from a very young age, as well as the effects of his personal relationships and subsequent political victories.

I watched this documentary as part of BBC's Storyville series, which throws up some interesting choices from time to time (as well as its fair share of guff). I had never heard of Aaron Swartz before, despite apparently knowing of/using half of the websites he founded and the fact I've been a benefactor of his battle for freedoms of the internet. He founded Reddit and openlibrary.org amongst others, he was partially responsible for inventing RSS and Creative Commons, he was a child prodigy when it comes to coding, and a social and political activist. From a filmmaking perspective, it is nothing to special but the core and content of this documentary HAS to be seen by everyone. Aaron Swartz is someone we should all look at and learn about in school. Please give it a watch.

Really moving documentary about an internet genius who wanted to do good for the world and got pushed to suicide by the U.S. government.
Lots of law and copyright talk so if this isn't your thing you might find it boring. The only downside is that we don't have any interview with anyone from the opposing camp. Would have been interesting.
Made me really mad what they did to him it's really disgusting.
He was instrumental in saving the internet from the "old world" as they say so thank you and RIP Aaron.

Your own government would rather pour millions of their own dollars down the drain in an effort to "make an example" out of someone who believed that information should be free for anyone to access, than release their grip on the keys that they shouldn't even be holding. Your government and the corporations that lobby for its power do not care about your rights, they never have, and they never will. Every single person in power at MIT, the FBI, Secret Service, and the prosecution team behind Aaron Swartz's case is a murderer and they will never face any repercussions.

aaron swartz is the modern day alan turing. this picture, along with the the snowden documentary should be shown in highschool. i would include post-secondary institutions as well but we all know how much they care about their students. at the end of the day, you are just a student id
An efficient documentary on a contemporary martyr that played a big role in freedom-of-speech activism. Given the theme, it's clear, and necessary, that this kind of film call on its viewers for action. Considering that, my main complaint is that the movie uses over the top music to achieve emotional impact and gets a little too preachy over the subject. Even being a doc, I think it resembles the highly criticized oscar-baity biopics The Theory of Everything and The Imitation Game.
It is necessary for every single person to watch this documentary. Aaron's thoughts and work needs to be recognized and remembered even more these days when net neutrality is being threatened. We cannot allow under any circumstance that his brave actions become just an anecdote, instead we need to keep fighting against injustice just like this kid did in the past.
