  Simultaneously a dissection of the 80s macho-action culture and an enrapturing, intoxicating exploration of those previously surface-level tropes; John Woo's The Killer is a gloriously violent fairy-tale of immense delight and contained insanity. Whether stopping time itself to bask in the beauty of squibs or carefully adjusting the complex character arcs; John Woo released an enchanting new blend of action and story into the world and we haven't been the same since.

  It also makes me cry. Every single time. If I could use one word to describe The Killer, it would be pure poetry. Oh, that's two words? Ah fuck it.

  Every time I watch The Killer, I'm overwhelmed. Words are so inadequate. It's the purest melodrama there ever has been.

  A world so intoxicatingly visual, where the ultimate tragedy is the loss of one's eyesight.

  A movie so big and bold even the opening credits are huge.

  The plotting is denser, with more forward momentum than A Better Tomorrow, while retaining the repetition of flashbacks and theme song. Where Hard-Boiled is all-propulsive, The Killer is caught in-between, forward and back, every moment haunted by past failure and looking ahead only to self-destruction.

Und zu Chow Yun Fat, Tauben, Zeitlupen-Gewalt, dem Blei-Ballet, asiatischer Melodramatik, heldenhaftem Blutvergießen, Männern, die den Weg bis ans Ende gehen, Panflöten, beidhändigem Ballern, Sally Yehs "Shallow Drunk Life", dieser dynamischen Kamera, der Integrität, der Konsequenz oder dem Gefühl, einen Film gesehen zu haben, der mein Kinoleben wieder ein Stück verändert hat. A Masterpiece of Heroic Bloodshed. Punkt.

  Dudes Rock!!

  Kids: the love story between Ah Jong & Jennie was heartbreaking.

  Adults: the love story between Ah Jong & Fung Sei was heartbreaking.

  Legends: the love story between Shrimp Head & Small B was heartbreaking.

  This film will blow you away. 

  Indeed! And Dumbo and Micky Mouse have never been more badass. 

  ,,The Killer’’ is not only a great action film, but also a great drama. And extremely well made. 

  Although this one is not my favourite of director John Woo and also not my favourite of actor Chow Yun-Fat (it will probably always be ,,Hard Boiled’’), I still enjoyed this film very much. 

  I will certainly appreciate it even more after a rewatch. 

  Hong Kong cinema is fantastic (and underestimated?) and I really need to dive deeper into it. 

  I highly recommend ,,The Killer’’ for action film fans!

  I always leave one bullet, either for myself or for my enemy.

  Wowowowow.
  Now I wholeheartedly understand why people say this is THE superior John Woo film, sometimes you just have to witness the masterpiece for yourself. Having experienced both; Hard Boiled and The Killer, I can proudly say that I will not choose hehe! How can you? Both are cinematically exceptional, each are drenched in style, deliver pulsating action sequences—that you can feel— and are highly influential in the gangster/crime genre, but I’m an absolute sucker for all things brutally extravagant and over-the-top, Hard Boiled really gets that job done effectively.   Endlich im Extended Cut genossen - und folgende Momente noch mal neu in mein Herz geschlossen:

  Dieser in rotes Licht getauchte Shot von Jeff in Minute 43, wie er lässig an dieser Tür mit den Lamellen rechts im Bild lehnt. Alain Delon hätte es nicht cooler gekonnt.

  Die Enttäuschung, Belustigung und Trauer, die Jeffs Lachen und Gesicht gleichzeitig in Minute 45 ausstrahlen.

  Der Zorn in seinem Blick bei Minute 48:30 und dieses bedrohliche Pan-Flöten-Thema, das hier in dieser Variation zum ersten Mal einsetzt.

  Der Mexican Standoff während Jennie Tee serviert und die anschließende Jagd zum Dach bis wieder runter auf den Boden ist für mich immer noch großes Kino.

  Der Gong, der bei Minute 92 erklingt und die kurze Montage…
