  A fantastic examination of a very small group of individuals that pursue, verify and log video game highs scores, focusing on two mens pursuit of the Donkey Kong record. Engaging and interesting throughout, King of Kong succeeds where good docs do: They make you care about people and things that have never mattered to you before. It also teaches us that being an asshole is bad, but not as bad as being an ass-hole with a mullet.

  Obsessive-compulsive autism goes head-to-head with narcissistic personality disorder. Shoutout to Billy’s henchman, one of the best characters in film history. This would be amazing as a sports documentary but the fact that all of this lying and scheming is from the schlubbiest looking guys in the world makes it even better.

  Joesph Campbell eat your heart out.

  Every once in awhile reality writes itself more perfectly than the most thought out Monomyth hero. Steve Wiebe is the easily the most likeable guy on the planet. He must have some serious skeletons in his closet because on the surface he is squeaky clean. He's the underdog, he's the family man, he's nice, he has integrity. He's the guy you WANT to root for.

  Then there's Billy Mitchell. At first appearances, also a nice guy. As this documentary so beautifully exposes though, that's an act. He's actually the antagonist in our story who will do anything he can to stay on top. His methods are questionable. He's the guy you root for if…

  Your first reaction while watching this movie is, "wow, what a bunch of dorks." That sentiment doesn't totally go away by the end of the film, but it is tempered by the knowledge that Donkey Kong scores may be inconsequential in the big picture, but we don't live our lives in the big picture. People find day-to-day meaning by finding something they can do, no matter how objectively meaningless it is, and focusing on doing that thing well. By the end of the movie, you're totally rooting for hapless nerd (and failed baseball player/musician) Steve Weibe to get the highest ever score in Donkey Kong. And you're rooting for reigning champ and giant douchenozzle Bill Mitchell to get herpes or something

  Hell-raising musical genius Chet Baker once mused that the purpose of life was to find something you like doing, and do it better than anyone. For loveable everyman Steve Wiebe and hissable villain Billy Mitchell, that thing is Donkey Kong, a near-mythic arcade game that saw the first appearance of a certain red-hatted plumber. Mitchell is the long-reigning world champion, Wiebe the challenger whose posting of the first million score attracts the suspicions of the video game world's self-appointed record keepers.

  Seth Gordon's documentary takes a promisingly odd premise and does wonderful things with it, creating a film that's hilarious, affecting and likely to make you rail at the sheer injustice of what you're seeing.

  It's really kind of a sad story about a guy who legitimately wants to conquer a record. Who gets disrespected and treated like scum from the playground by a bunch of grown men stuck in the 80's. All of them worship some A-hole who has the highest score on Donkey Kong. The great thing about this story is Steve Wiebe. A man that never wavers in response to all the ugliness slung his way. He simply returns kindness and respect for every insult and judgement cast on him. Hollywood couldn't make this up any better. And the ending, while not perfect, is satisfying.
