I love the build up, the hesitation, the teasing, and the payoff. It's the essence of what a cinematic kiss should be. If only it were as great as that sounds.

So recently as part of my course we’ve been watching a good many short films from the dawn of cinema, pre-1900. Most of these came from The Edison Company, then later the Lumière brothers. The Kiss was one of Thomas Edison’s first productions, directed by William Heise. It was also one of the first films to be shown commercially to the public, beaten only by Edison’s rivals from overseas, Auguste and Louis Lumière.

Watching a lot of these early films right now, so sorry if I'm clogging up your activity feed. Fascinating to see where we started and trace it to how we got to where we are today, how some tendencies continue decades later, and how many different ways cinema could've gone. This one is particularly interesting to watch, as it's the first kiss put to screen and what's usually such an intimate activity is rendered a spectacle in an unprecedented fashion.
