Yesterday was one of those soul-sucking days that I couldn't wait to leave behind me. Until I saw this film. And suddenly there was light at the end of the tunnel. One of the reasons: A phenomenal Jack Nicholson, turning in a world-class performance of exceptional vibrance and screen presence. One of his greatest, to be sure.
Loved the screenplay too; it has the perfect fusion of drama and humor, without, should I say, going overboard on either side (the story follows three navy men so there's no way I wouldn't throw in a related pun somewhere). There's substance and superb character development, but also a constant stream of mood-lifting laughs.
Just one last detail: What in the holy name of irony happened to Randy Quaid? Talk about life imitating art. Not to worry if he's caught though: If he gets an eight-year sentence, he'll probably just be doing six.
