“Hot damn, I wish I was something else sometimes.”
History has an interesting way of codifying certain untruths as true. Whether by way of shortcut or faulty memory or utilitarian spin by the powers that be, things that didn’t happen—or, perhaps more often, didn’t exactly happen quite like that—worm their way into the official record and thus become established fact, the archaeological effort needed to contradict them either underfunded or underreported (or both). As but one minor example, take President Jimmy Carter’s famous “malaise” speech. Delivered in 1979, Carter’s speech about the energy crisis and the need for a “windfall profits” tax on the oil industry referred to a “crisis of confidence” among the American people but never used the…
Bleak, upsetting, and filled with zero hope… a notorious hard watch—the 70’s were underway.
This feels like a checkpoint between Romero’s 1968 living deadmare and Tobe Hooper’s 1974 sun soaked Texas grizzle as the genre continues its forever mutation… that 68 to 74 era where the ‘modern’ horror film found its footing has always been a huge fascination for me, and The Last House on the Left is a big part of that. Back in the early 90's, this and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre were the two films that, when I picked up the box at the video store, I felt like I was doing something wrong—those very distinct vhs artwork glistening in the plastic protective cases felt like these two titles were…
for anyone who felt safe and idealistic after changing the channel to something that wasn't vietnam or manson.
You must think we're stupid right? No, we're not stupid. We might be horny old pigs, but, we ain't stupid.

When I was a jaded teenager I dismissed this movie as cheap camp exploitation that wasn't "scary". It was a mixture of silliness and grittiness that didn't mesh together and I could not for the life of me understand what the big deal about this film was.
Over the years I've either become completely delusional about what this movie is really about or I've come to recognize it's genius. I'm not sure which one it is anymore to be quite honest.
The silliness I mentioned is still there, but I think it's purpose is to represent the Brady…
The Road To Halloween - Eliminating The Horror 'Classics'
To keep from turning it off and putting on something that you like instead, keep repeating it's only 80 minutes long.... it's only 80 minutes long....it's only 80 minutes long....
The Last House On The Left is a film that has an interesting back-story when it comes to its history of censorship and being banned, especially here in the UK. A back-story that is far more interesting than anything that actually happens in this film. This really is an incredibly tedious and laughably inept film from a director I don't really care much for in the first place.
I quite liked Red Eye until Cillian Murphy's impression of Herr Flick in…
A violent and gritty explosion onto the film scene for Wes Craven, it's also possibly the most famous entry in the rape/revenge subgenre.
Last House on the Left is a remake/retelling/reimagimanition of Bergman's Virgin Spring. It tells the same story. Daughters who are raped and killed by pure evil. Through happenstance, the murderers stumble upon the parents, and then revenge takes place.
In both films, the evil is the murderers, but the failure is from something higher. In Virgin Spring, the failure is God. In Last House of the Left, the failure is the government.
1972 was a weird time for America. An endless war in Vietnam with many kids being killed. Killer hippies from the Manson murders just a…
Dirty, dingy exploitation flick that's has cringe inducing dialogue and acting! If the budget was any lower they would have canned the actors and went with shadow puppets! Which may have been a huge improvement! Don't even get me started on the questionable music choices throughout the film!
If you don't mind "Dumpster Diving" there are some genuinely shocking and horrific moments in the film! Wes Craven managed to garner the ire of prudish censors and critic's but that didn't stop the film from heavily influencing future horror director's and films!
If you intend to view this feature then by all means be sure to select the Unrated/Uncut version!

Well, this is one of those rare cases of me much preferring the remake to the original. I don’t think this film is bad but I also just don’t think it’s that great. I had seen this before...about 10 years ago...so it wasn’t one of those that I saw as a kid and therefore appreciate nostalgically...even if it does hold some sentimental value due to its controversial nature. I saw this as a fully grown and fully jaded adult...which means I didn’t find it to be as traumatic as I would have as a kid, either.
This story of two girls who getting mixed up with the wrong…
