Not nearly as entertaining as it is indulgent, but that leaves a lot of room for plenty of entertainment. There are parts of this that really took me back to being a kid and not quite understanding what any grownups were talking about.
The 1970s: When child molestation was considered a minor vice roughly on par with shoplifting or alcoholism, not even warranting a complete explanation.
If an eccentric aristocrat invited me to an exclusive party and he had assistants wearing shirts with his dead wife's name printed on them then I'd think it was completely unsuspicious and totally not weird at all.
nobody ever seems particularly worried about being murdered in movies like this.

It figures that the one time that Anthony Perkins and Stephen Sondheim got together to write a screenplay, it resulted in a mystery as delightful and conniving as this. The Last of Sheila. Features a strong cynical tone, plenty of misdirection, and sunny vacation vibes. Wish it had a little more flare behind the camera, but Herbert Ross keeps the ship afloat.

if you have a keen eye but find it hard to stick to your guns, this movie will try and gaslight you. the entire first act is a red herring and the last act made me shout “I knew I wasn’t crazy!” which is all you could really ask for from a film like this. they should’ve let tony perkins and that sondheim guy write more scripts.

This is either a film that portrays homosexuality as an action, or shows a man come out to his wife, or shows a man lie to his wife, or shows a man admit that someone else thought of him as a homosexual, and I'm not sure which one it is. This is because his sexuality/sexual experience/claim is used as both a plot point and a red herring, and everything in this movie is about the plot. I've complained recently about plot-over-ideas in another film, but this film's plot was different: it was a fantastic mystery.

As recommended by Rian Johnson, this was fkn fantastic. The writing was so snappy and layered. Perfect set-up and pay-off. Just so much goddamn fun.
